I believe the correct thread for the wheel lugs is 1/2 x 20. I had an original lug nut fail, the chrome cover came off, which is probably okay after 20 years of northeast salt and grime. I ordered new ones, Dorman brand, from Amazon (sorry, my bad). The ones they sent did not fit. It looked about right, fit the wrench, but I only got about 1/4 turn before it bound up. The studs are in good shape.

I looked carefully at the nut and it is stamped 12 x 1.5. So obviously it is a metric nut, very close to 1/2 x 20, but obviously not close enough. I sent them back, no problem I assume. But I got to wondering. I actually found a website, wheeloffset.net, that lists the spec for Jeep lugs as both M12-12 and 1/2-20.

https://wheeloffset.net/lugnuts/jeep/liberty/2006/

So it got me thinking, and I have a few questions:

Is there any way this is right? Had I forced the nuts, would they have held without damaging the studs?

Did Amazon just say, well the size is close enough, we’ll just send this one?

Assuming the size is not okay, is wheeloffset.net just mistaken? Were Jeeps produced with both sizes?

All just idle curiosity now; I’m buying the right size.

Thanks.

Everything I have on file says 1/2 x 20 UNC thread.
Quote:
No, 1/2"-20 and M12 x 1.5 lug nuts are not the same and are not interchangeable.
Key Differences
• 1/2"-20 (Imperial / Standard):
• Diameter: 0.500 inches (12.7 mm)
• Pitch: 20 threads per inch (UNF standard)
• M12 x 1.5 (Metric):
• Diameter: 12 mm (0.4724 inches)
• Pitch: 1.5 mm distance between thread

Thanks VW. So I wonder, does a guy that runs a wheel website really not know that?! Was AI involved? Does AI not know that? Did Amazon make a mistake, or did they just not care and figure I would keep the wrong nuts? All so strange.

I have found a little gorilla glue works wonders to hold the aluminum cap on.

Thanks Flman. The lug nut was pretty tight, and in getting it loose I kind of twisted off the aluminum cap, and mangled it in the process. I plan to replace all the nuts with solid ones.
