Another, "why diesel".
Years ago, when I was young. I was a firefighter in a suburban department outside Cincinnati. All our trucks were diesel. In 1964 the city of Cincinnati came out to see our new 1964 Mack Fire Truck it was the first one in south-west Ohio [so I was told, I was 5 at that time]. They went out and spec'ed all future fire trucks to be diesel. We always bought Mack Fire Apparatus until they stopped building them. When [if you are old enough to remember] there were a lot of ambulances burning up in the '80s because the gassers were underpowered and ran WAY too hot... the answer was to go diesel powered ambulances. Any heavy duty service has diesel powered vehicles.
Anyway, every time I got lost or disoriented searching a smoke filled house, I always keyed in on the sound of the diesel engine coming from my fire engine parked in the front of the house. The sound has always meant power and safety to me.
If you believe o8K's analysis of the internal combustion engine era, the diesel will still mean power and safety because it is far easier to modify it to run on "different" fuels.

Yes, and Yes, and Wow I think you just hit nail on the head for the best reason to love diesels. =0 took me a few minutes to gather myeself just to even reply. sniff sniff.... VERY cool....
in around about way, saying the same thing, thats why i got one, so i can keep on truckin =0 My personal experience which motivated my rant (tho ill keep this one shorter) is as follows:
I have a similar story to tell. I was in-route to New Orleans to save my sister from a VERY BAD situation, i wont go into details but the city was under marshall law (AND YES it was I was there dont tell me otherwise! and this was never advertised,). Cops opening fire on people in the streets, shooting them on site for trying to escape the inner city.... If it wasnt for my dad's 2500Ram Diesel, we would not have been able to find enough fuel so close to town to make a second run on the city to get her, saving her from the likes of the closest thing to a war scene as you can get w/ out being in one.
EDIT***
Well obviously i would have to type another 10 paragraphs to have it all make sense to you, and upon reading this for a second time, i suppose, there is not short story to all of it to be told and have it make sense, but yes they were, and if it isnt clear, if were them i would too. these were not innocent people, in most cases they were either shooting back, or riot'ing, looting, ect. My opoligies for trying to shorten the story to the point where it doesnt even make sense. THe place was not normal, everyone was just tyring to not die. Yes my prior paragraph completely misrepresents the situation......
