OK, maybe I'm really off base here, but I've purchased the Fumoto w/ adapter and it just seems too big to be hanging off the bottom of my oil pan.

What if...

You purchased the stock oil drain plug (that way you know it fits the odd BS-21 thread in the pan) and drilled and tapped a 1/4 NPT right through the middle of it?

Then go looking around aircraft parts and find something like this...

http://curtissuperiorvalve.com/pipethread.html

Image

The hex head from the oil drain plug (Chrysler p/n 04720352 ?) is about 8 mm high, and the website lists this CCA-39000 valve as 1.69 in of which I'll guess that about half is thread for a total height of around 29.5 mm (vs around 35 for the Fumoto + adapter).

Still poking around for an even lower profile valve...

if you went that direction, it might be good to put two small indents in the plug to you could remove it with a spanner, otherwise there's no way to get it out of the pan once you drill out the hex socket.

The internal hex drive fill plugs have been replaced with an external hex like a short bolt.

Also: I've been trading e-mails with a gentleman from Fumoto and if I wanted to order 500+ (yeah!) parts they would think about a custom thread cut...

The valve opening must be at the floor level in the pan to get full drainage to empty pan - that being the case, even tapping the pan for the cca-1400\1700 would result in excess extension, or incomplete drainage

Maybe something similar to the Cummins bung, which is drilled and cross-drilled, such that complete removal is unnecessary - just back it out a little so the cross-drilled passages clear the pan threads, and the oil drains thru the plug

Or, a small compact ball valve, retapping the pan for NPT, remove the handle until oil change time

Today I installed the CRD-108 adapter ( available from http://lubricationspecialist.com ) along with the Trasko M6 Dragon valve ( available from http://www.trasko-usa.com/ ), and so far it seems to be working well. I did use some teflon thread sealant between the adapter and the D-valve though, due to the D-valve bottoming out on the brass adapter.

In any case, this setup seems to work well, although it may very well stick out farther than the adapter used in conjunction with a Fumoto. (For reference, it sticks down 1.75 inches from the pan.)

I kind of wish our pan thread was more common, since just throwing in a Trasko D-valve or a Fumoto without an adapter would be quite nice.

Dumb British parallel threads. :(

As far as I remember I use the M3 Install it, -One shot deal- with a brass washer, does not use space at all and is very safe. draining is slow but well worth it

Really? The M3 is a 12mm-1.75 thread, which should be too small for our application. I think our thread is close to a 16mm-1.5 (what the M6 has), but is actually a 3/8" BSPP with 19 threads per inch. Are you sure you didn't just throw an M6 in there and cut new threads (seeing as the stainless is so much harder than the pan) in the process? I wouldn't doubt that working, but figured I'd use the adapter, knowing it should work since it had a female 16mm-1.5 that would accept the Fumoto 108 or the Trasko M6 (that are male 16mm-1.5).

In any case, I'm glad it works for you, since it probably looks nice and clean installed. If you get a chance, can you verify what model you did indeed install on your vehicle? I know the records of that may long since be gone, but I'm still curious.

We will have a Fumoto to use that does not require the adapter. Fumoto has had it for years but just looked at it a few weeks ago. The way the listed the thread made me think it was wrong. But when I got one and measured it up its a prefect fit. As soon as I get some in stock I will let you know. Should only be a week or so.

Any chance for a trade-in program? :)

X2, I'd seriously like to get a little more clearance beneath the valve. Also, is it with or without nipple?

Dag nabbit! I just did an oil change last night, and the clearance issues are the reason I haven't installed a Fumoto yet. Any chance you (or someone) could post a photo of the new valves installed, so we can have an idea of the clearance?

Any update on this? From looking at Fumoto's site, I get the impression that the F102 may be the right adapter. It is PF-3/8", which is supposedly functionally interchangeable with BSPP. I'd like confirmation one way or the other though.

Greg, is the F102 the correct Fumoto, or is it another one?

Thanks, and let us know when you have the correct adapter in stock.

I bought the replacement drain plug and measured it with my thread gages. It's not 18 threads / inch, it's not 20, it's not anything metric. I can't think of anything that's functionally interchangable with something of a different thread pitch without retapping.

Has anyone tried an Oil Buddy? It sucks the oil up from the pan through the dipstick?

I used it on all my boats and some other conventional gas engines. Any disadvantages?

Purists will tell you that vaccuming the oil out won't get all the oil, but if it's good enough for Mercedes, it works for me. They use it on some of their cars.
