Well I didn't get to install the new differential on the Jeep at the GTG, seems we were a victim of poor casting. The two covers sent me were from a different lot and has to be sent back because they were hitting the bearing carrier clips at the edges. Brent of PML is sending the UPS label to do a return to factory and will see about getting the problem taken care of for us, then shipping the reworked units or new ones back to me for install and to do pictures.

Did you ever get a good PML rear diff cover installed? I am finally thinking about doing this mod and getting rid of my rear diff rock ring armour; it's a pain to uninstall and reinstall every time I want to change the rear diff fluid. Also, to the notes in earlier posts about synthetic lube - I switched to the 75W-140 synthetic in the rear because I consider the torque of the diesel to be severe service just in itself.

I asked them to take the time to find the problem and they have. It is not so much a casting error as was a slight design error that didn't take into account that the axle clips can be in different positions beside centered. There new casting will include the small relief spots on each side of the cover and will not ever be a problem again.

After discussing the cause and solution with Brent at PML I suggested he could mill mine out to fit when after he got hin in house stock corrected and then do mine. Mine requires a different set up due to the fins being milled off. Anyway he sent me an email the other day saying he would be doing mine later this week and then send it back to me. I told him to take his time as it's too hot here to mess with it till Sep or Oct, but he will probably send it on just to get it out of their way which is what I guess I would do if it were my shop.

Anyway that is really pretty darn good service if you ask me. I prefer to deal with staight up honest people and he has been that to say the least. I would/will highly recommend him and the PML folks to anyone who asks or is interested in their types of products.

I would need the fins milled off as well in order to have a chance of fitting with the gas tank skid on. Looks like it's not available to order that way on their web site so maybe they could customize another one for me. I'll give them a call.

Yes they will do it but as a single unit it will be costly extra, probably $50 to $75 more. Mine was done at a discount that would have been given to ten or more folks ording it with the fins milled down some to allow room for fuel skid. The full finned model I tried on mine would clear, but only left about a 1/2" or less clearence and that was just too close to tank skid for my liking.

They may do a small special price run of 10 or so of these for a group buy, but I am not sure there are enough interested in fuel skid or differintial cover change out to make it happen in a timely manner. Does't hurt to ask though. Heck they might even decide to just do a few like that and set aside for those like you and I who want the special cover.

Along with the PML cover, didn't someone post on another thread that they had discovered that the gasket for a GM 8 1/2 diff, from another company, would fit on our rear diff, getting rid of that blasted RTV?

AllJeep - if you are looking to get the fins milled I would be interested in getting in on that. Just did the 12.5k service this weekend and spent as much time cleaning off the old RTV as I did on everything else combined. Wasn't really crazy about the rubber fill plug either. Time for a new cover with a drain plug!
