One thing that has always puzzled me about biodiesel math: $0.43/gal to produce??? Commercial brewers should be even more cost efficient from basic economies of scale and can take advantage of the $1.00/gal blending credit ($-0.57 net production cost???). Even adding in some taxes, it would net them to about nothing to produce. Local oil suppliers are selling B100 for @ $3.50/gal retail. With margins that great, investors should be stumbling over each other to get on this gravy train.
So, If you make biodiesel from WVO you got from White Castle, does it make your CRD scoot?
Well, 2 things as I see them. 1) Home bio producers don't count labor costs and 2) Most (All?) Commercial brewers are using virgin oil which competes with other uses (soy and canola have lots of uses) and drives the price up. I'm not sure there's the volume of WVO available to supply a large refinery - or it would cost too much to collect (having people driving around back alleys collecting 10-20 gallons at a time is expensive).
Ultimately I think the best answer is the algae-oil that folks have been talking about. Problem is ADM and their ilk won't let it happen.
Also, home brewers aren't adding in the $0.35-ish per-gallon road taxes as well.
But yeah, it's definitely cheaper if you're not amortizing the equipment costs or adding in your time. For me, my wkends are worth a lot (not to mention my garage space) so I'm paying $3.53/gallon for ASTM spec biodiesel made by a company who will stand behind any problems w/ my Jeep that result from bad fuel.
It's worth it to me.
