Another thought on the CRD VM Motori engine.

Americans do not generally consider Italian Engineering to be on a par with German Engineering. That may influence the decision to use the MB engine in the US; marketing.

Of course nothing could be further from the truth, VM is in Cento, just a few miles from Modena. Anyone who has ever worked on a Ferrari understands that Italian Engineering is second to none, especially in the engine department.

Your unfornutaly right about the conception of Italian engineering  Who ever herd of a "dual overhead cam 4 valves per cylinder diesel engine anyway :?: I like mine :D

Don't forget the "Valley of the Gun" where Tanfoglio Witness is my favorite. 8)

Regarding Italian engineering... Several years ago I worked with Italian manufacturing machinery on a daily basis. I can tell you that the casting and machining of that equipment was second to none. Very solid mechanical designs, and good use of technologies which were new at the time. The subsystems were where they had some issues. From that experience, the R428 being a well built engine with a poor CCV design doesn't surprise me. I don't know that VM deserves a free pass on that issue. From the marketing materials I have seen from VM, I think the CCV is their design, not a DC add on.

It is an old design, been on VW's for 10 years or more. I can't remember at present who invented the thing, but it wasn't VM I know that for sure. My 83 MB diesel had a CCV similar to the Provent as OEM install.

I think you have a point with the subsystem design thing. The airconditioning in my Ferrari doesn't work worth a darn. Of course, you can hear that engine much better with the windows down anyway; so who cares.

I really enjoy the sound of the R428 as well. Not your average diesel.
