As far as the exhaust brake goes, our jeeps have a VGT turbo and they can be made to work as an exhaust brake, but you do need to keep the trany locked up or it can over heat (the trany). I have noticed that if I lock out the over drive on the trany going down hill I get some engine braking, I would like to know how this efficts the tranny temps.

When you hit that od off button doesn't the tranny send the command to lock-up after it gets downshifted to 3rd? I would believe it does, or at least tries too-- as it locks after 3rd on upshift with the overdrive off. I would hate to see the temp on the tranny if its not locked. Makes me feel better about having done the Suncoast.

Wow, that is remarkable! The engine is the same in the UK Liberty. Are there any other drivetrain differences (brakes, cooling, axles) that you are aware of? Or is it simply a liability issue?

Yep! Turning O/D off locks out the higher gears, and the transmission stays locked up in 3rd. It has quite a bit of pulling power in that gear.

If the TC stays locked with the OD off then there shouldn't be a problem with using it for compression braking. It's not as good as my Dodge/Cummins with the exhaust brake but it does help.
