Above all else make sure your Siris radio is payed up. Drove to Alaska in December and had it to play with till I hit the Ak border. First time I'd used it because we don't get it here in Ak and my new CRD came with a subscription I guess. I think they're great little traveling cars. I just tooled up with the basics and dug out the plugin for the block heater. A bottle of 911 Diesel treat is about all the extra I needed and didn't use. Got 25 mpg running in 4X4 and it started at -18F after being plugged in for 30 mins.

Looks can be deceiving when it comes to filters. It may look dirty on the surface from ccv oil contamination, but if you pull apart the pleats it is clean. I've seen filters that looked dirty that wouldn't budge a vacuum filter gauge at full throttle. But it's your money, do it for piece of mind. However that is much different than it needing to be changed. Unless you drive in extremely dusty conditions, 6500 miles is not very far on a filter.

Try doing an oil analysis sometime. The stock OEM air intake system will trash your air filter in about 5,000 miles. I've run 20,000 miles on air filters with a Jetta TDI; such is not the case with our CRD's.

OK, I didn't know that. How does the OEM air system trash a air filter? I have also been told the OEM air intake on my 02 PSD is junk. Every analysis i've done has shown silicon less than 2 ppm. A little dirt/oil on the outside ridges of the filter is not evidence of a "trashed" filter. But like I said, do what makes you comfortable.

Thanks all .. I'm looking forward to the trip. my CRD has been flawless minus minor rear window mechanics failing. but I will get every thing together for the drive ..what air filter is recommended a K&N?

Lots here don't like K&N air filter, but for me I like to keep my pistons sand blasted. Really, there is a truck driver that put a million miles on one in a Chevy gas pick-up. He claims it saved him $1,800 in replacement filters. I ran a K&N in a Durango for 100,000 miles engine still ran perfect when I sold it.

I did two 2,000 mile round trips on our Libby in the past 12 months with no problem. Here is what I carried with me on my road trip:

1. Portable jump starter just in case that has a built in aircompressor and 110 VAC so I can charge my cell phone while I drive.
2. Tow rope to help the less fortunate in a snow storm.
3. Container of Power Service or your favorite fuel additive
4. Tire plug kit to repair plug flats. All my vehicles have a tire plug kit in the trunk. I rather plug a tire than have to put on a spare. DIY plug is just as effective as the tire flat repair at a tire store. http://www.amazon.com/Time-Flat-Emergen ... B0006GSL6I
5. ATM Card/ Credit Car/ and at least 100 bucks in cash for emergency. There are places in the middle of no where that won't accept credit cars for fuel and having cash helps a bunch particularly if ATMs is down or not available.
6. 1 quart of replacment oil
7. 1 gallon of distilled water. Can be used in as drinking water in emergency and to top off radiator too.
8. Cheap 5 dollar toolkit form Walmart. You never know when you might need to use it for.
9. Cheap styrofoam cooler for drinks and food. Buying cokes in bulk before your trip will save your money.
10. Food, blankets, flare gun, handgun, signalling mirror, flash light, cell phone, satellite phone, night vision goggles, and of course hitch hiker bumper sticker that reads "booty, gas, or grass, no one rides for free....

Forgive me, but what is an 02 PSD?

All of my oil analysis shows silicon levels close to or above 30ppm at 5,000 miles or greater. I never said that by merely looking at an air filter one could determine how much life is remaining; an oil analysis helps.

Other members have reported relatively high silicon levels; any explanation for that? (No, there doesn't appear to be any leaks in the air intake system.)

I've been on 3 long distance trips in ours. All I take along with me is a smile. I would suggest looking for fuel when the needle approaches the 1/4 mark. That last quarter tank goes by very quickly as we found out in Bugtussle, Utah.

Mine does the same thing. Last 1/4 tank really means about 2-3 gallons left for me - and also, the low fuel light on mine means "your out of fuel pull over now!" :D

condoms.

When you need one, you need one. Can't ever have too many laying around.

PSD is a powerstroke diesel. On a new engine silicon will be higher for the first few changes due to sand remaing in the block from the casting process. This may be what you are seeing. If I had 30 ppm i'd be worried too.

After I had my F37 performed I can go probably 40-50 miles after my low fuel light comes on. The light normally comes on when I have about 20 miles to empty on my EVIC. When my EVIC says 0 miles to empty, I've driven up to 15 miles additional after that. Based upon my fill up I still had at least a half gallon of fuel remaining.

Having said that, if on a long trip, when my fuel light comes on (or a little before) I immediately start looking for a good place to fill up.

I was in a situation where when my light came on, the last gas station I passed was 35 miles back and in front of me was unknown. I ended up going about 40 miles after it came on with 9 of those being in N doing a downhill coast trying to milk the thing. Fill up took 19.8 gallons. So, I could have gone another 7 or 8 miles. No worries. :D

If you need to keep a little fuel, and you want to keep it in the cabin of the car, might I suggest a soda bottle of biodiesel?

First: it smells a hell of a lot better. If you spill it on your hands, its won't stink for days. Couple quarts might get you out of a tight spot

Second, if you DO have to change an fuel filter, its nice to prime it a little by pouring in something that ain't so stinky.

Third, if you have to clean anything (even a filter), it is a great solvent that doesn't hurt the hands. Gets gum out of hair.

Fourth, it helps accelerate wet wood in campfires and still product a non-toxic cooking fire. Not accelerate in as fun a way as gasoline, or methanol, or ...well, I could go on...

Biodieseljeep - Actually thats a question I've had. I'm used to driving a pickup so I always had a spare gascan in the back of the truck for when I was dumb enough to run out of gas. Whats a 'safe' way to store a spare gallon or two in a vehicle where I can't put it outside in the bed of the truck? I'd rather not breathe fumes inside...

I put the biodiesel in an old 2 liter soda bottle (old = very dry and clean). Try not to leave any air in it, because that will expand in the heat. Also, slightly "dent" the bottle when you fill it, that way any expnding air has room.

BioD won't "eat" a soda bottle or the plastic seals on the cap...as far as I tested (2 years). Theoretically, the plastics will age faster with the methanol present (even in good commercial BioD) So change it every couple years.

No fumes, even if it spills. I keep it upright in one of the mesh pockets in back. I don't think it could damage any internal plastics, but it might discolor things. so clean the outside well after you fill it. Maybe even wrap it is a plastic bag.
