So I added a quart when I got home (and the stick showed full), took it for a 2-mile drive, and checked it again. Nothing on the stick. So I added another quart. Again for a drive. Again, nothing on the stick. At this point it's dark so I added a third quart and the stick showed full but I'll check it when the wife gets home tomorrow. How the hell could they have let this thing out 3 quarts low? Doesn't anyone at the dealer use the dipstick anymore? Or my guess is if they did they didn't drive it around in between quarts to let it settle in and warm up.
Argh. Hopefully this fixes the suring at stoplights.
It is about money as far as most techs go, the warranty pay is generally 1/4 to 1/2 what they make on non warranty jobs. When your trying to feed your family guess what happens. They probably checked the tranny in neutral as they do with the PU's and that will leave it about 3 or 4 quarts low also, but it just means they didn't stop to look and read the stick.
At least you caught it early and probably haven't damaged the tranny, unless you been towing or doing a lot of letting it sit over night then doing starts and soon as warning lights go out throw it in gear and take off where tranny does't have time to pump fluid to TC before being put in gear.
