I was just looking at the MB SUV - cost around $45,000 with taxes. My CRD cost $24,000 and I have the 85,000 mile warrenty. I currently have 16 k miles on it. In that past I have owned Jetta and Rabbit diesels.

Still have not found a replacement vechicle that can do what the CRD does (towing and MPG) for the money.

After tracking this board,I expect to have problems wth the CRD over my planned 250 k life time. This board provides a great forum to understand some of the basic short comings of the vechicle and parts that may be needed to be replaced.

Except for the oil and air filter I plan to always have Jeep dealers change all other filters (transmission, fuel), that way if something happens they are responsible.

I have a boat with twin Yanmar 315 hp diesel engines. Diesel engines are always more costly to maintain than gas, but provide you with a much longer life and better performance. Air in the fuel line is always an issue if the filters are not changed correctly.

Bottom line I think the CRD is a vechicle where you love it or leave it. That is an individual choice. I love mine and will work through problems - with the help of a good mechanic!!!

I was just about to order a fuel filter. Do I need to plan on ordering this gasket every time too? If so, would you happen to have a part number?

Nope, gasket comes with the filter. They have a white dummy plug screwed into the drain hole on the new filter. Just take the gasket off the white dummy plug and put it on the WIF sensor.

Great! Thanks retmil46, I'll get it ordered.

Just noticed the fuel filter installation entry in the CRD FAQ. Excellent! The only thing it's missing as a handy reference is the part number. :)

I changed my fuel filter in 15 minutes yesterday I think they put the filter in a very good location for an easy change. I don't know why some are unbolting the filter head.

I had the same thoughts.

I have big hands, and I couldn't get to the WIF sensor so I laid on my back under the Jeep and unhooked the WIF. Then I went back up top and unscrewed the filter.

Took maybe 15 minutes the first time I did it.
