IMHO a muffler on a crd = fail. Why pay for what you don't need?

A straight pipe without the "cat" (or a gutted "cat") is not significantly louder than stock. There is 100% no drone. It is not loud (unfortunately) With the windows up you will likely notice no difference. (particularly if you have a sunroof or a light bar). Around town with the windows down you will hear more noise reflecting from surrounding objects, and a bit of whistle when you drop the hammer.

No muffler is 1000000000% daily drivable.
However if your state has a visual inspection, it may require the use of a muffler on turbocharged vehicles. (ca does not)

While your at it, make sure you remove the restriction at the flange.

My performance muffler (super 44, a bad choice for a crd anyway) made more noise than no muffler (a little drone, woosh sound at @2300), although it was not significant.

won't that make the jeep much louder? I will be driving it as my only car. its got to be relaible enough to get me there daily with few trips to the shop for unplanned repairs.

Nope, the turbo and cat essentially muffle the sound already...

This is with Magnaflow #12226 - http://liberty.eurekaboy.com/magnaflow.wav

I believe Stan also did a straight pipe sound clip, so you can get a comparison.

If you buy the CRD, I would also recommend immediately cleaning the MAP sensor (search on this site for an easy how-to). It gets covered in soot and oil and hurts performance... GDE eliminates the soot problem.

Most folks will drive this Jeep with relatively few issues. People on here tend to have problems, but they also tend to heavily mod.... A new muffler, MAP cleaning, and GDE tune will not cause any known issues. GDE has about 60k miles on their test vehicles with no problems, just more power and much better mileage

I do not plan to Mod it any more than I have with any other car I have had. Usually if I like the car and plan to keep it a few years I will put in a K &N filter. I am more intrested in keeping it running good so that I can drive and enjoy a vehicle everyday with out alot of constant fuss.

I know PA has a visual inspection for gas powered as well as the computer hook up emissions test. I would think diesel would require the visual too so I dont think I can take off the muffler.

K&N filter = bad idea on these Jeeps. You can go with it if you want, but most folks on here won't recommend it. Get an Amsoil Ea filter instead. Costs only $30, good for 100k miles, and you vacuum it clean. It still lets in much more air than stock, but it won't let in the large particles that a K&N will.

The muffler mod is relatively cheap (parts & labor ~$100, or, if you are a do-it-yourselfer, $70 for the Magnaflow). It will improve mileage slightly by significantly improving your Jeep's ability to coast downhill and up to stop lights.

GDE is a little more expensive, but you will make the money back after a year or two of driving (depending on your commute). More importantly, GDE improves drivability (smoother shifting, better coasting, no black smoke), longevity (by virtually eliminating the EGR) and all around fun (ask anyone who has one, I get mine next week!).

Of course, I consider myself the type of person who drives a vehicle into the ground before I will buy another one. So I'm looking to make my Jeep last as long as possible and get the best mileage possible. I only really plan on doing the above mods, but they will pay for themselves in a couple of years and significantly improve my Jeep's lifespan and my driving experience

x2 on the GDE tuning. There are a lot of things you can do right off the bat, but no one here wants to overwhelm you with all the possibilities - for they are many.

Look around on the forum some, and in particular pay attention to the mods users list in their signatures. Common things you will see are letters, like "ORM", "EHM", and so forth; also "Provent", lifts, (Frankenlift is a common one) and tires. Explanation for what these are is in the CRD Tech section - thanks to those that have been in the trenches with these CRD's since day one, and are intimately familiar with them. Without this forum I would have either traded or become bitter with my CRD, as I estimate I would be on my second out-of-warranty EGR valve.

I find that there are those that bought the CRD because it is diesel, and some who are more into the Jeep's capabilities rather than mainly for the uniqueness of the diesel. I am one of the former, as all my mods (except tires) have to do with the engine rather than off-road capability. Having both on this board is what makes L.O.S.T. what it is; the fact that there is no one doing any bashing on this board toward non-off-roaders and vice versa.

Rest assured that if you decide to purchase the CRD, if anything crops up with it you can be 99% sure that you can find an answer on this forum.

100% agreed. I, too, bought my CRD because I realize the HUGE benefits of having a diesel.

Go for it, as a recent purchaser - you will enjoy the CRD. 8) This forum has the info to go any direction with this rig that you may choose. Hope you buy it. As others have said - GDE tune & clean your MAP.

Friends do not let friends do a K&N.

Thanks for all the info.

Hope to look at the CRD with 102k miles soon.

Seriously, is this just too many miles? Should I keep looking?

Thanks,

Trekker

The timing belt is scheduled to be replaced at 100K so you may want to take that into consideration

It depends on if this particular CRD has been well maintained.... if it is bone stock in the engine (no SEGR, no Provent, or no other preventative measures taken), I would avoid it with a 10 foot poll.

You can still find plenty of low mileage CRDs (20-30k) for under $15k, even the Limited models. I think there are a couple still available in this forum down in the for sale area.

Shop around. No sense in buying a high mileage vehicle when there are plenty of other options.

x2. Here are a couple of links to L.O.S.T. members trying to sell their CRD's.

Here is one in Georgia: http://www.lostjeeps.com/forum/phpBB3/vie ... hp?t=44609

But here is the one I'd jump on, http://www.lostjeeps.com/forum/phpBB3/vie ... hp?t=41025

That one is DEFINITELY worth a road trip, if it is still available.

Thanks for the input. I will look for one with lower mileage.

No way I can make a long road trip to get one until my current season with the National Parks is over.

Thanks,

You might ought to try PM'ing Endurance to see if the Jeep is even still available. He's in Tuscaloosa Alabama (shudder) so unless you're out west or in Northern New England you could probably do it with an overnight trip.

But with the prices you could get these at, you could do better than 102K for sure, I think, unless you're on a $6000 budget.

I have been reading the owners manual I got in PDF format about the maintance requirements and recomendations. I see 0w40 or 5w40 synthetic oil is the only oils they say to use. I found a price for mobile 1 0w40 at $7.79 a quart. thats going to make for a $60+ DIY oil change. 3 times what I pay to have it done for me in the outback. what do you all use in ur jeeps? what about other things like transfer case fluid changes?

I'm trying to get an idea how different the cost to run it and keep it going good is going to be and if I am truely ready for it.

BTW I may be looking at 2 friday if all goes well with getting the freedom check from the credit union.

one is a green limited with every thing dvd nav and the works 36,000 miles asking 17,900 but that may be over what I can do

and the one I mentioned before.

Two things:

1) On a diesel, you will change your oil less frequently than on a gasser (patooie!). 3,000 miles is a bit overzealous... most folks tend to go 5-6k, at least. Some upwards of 10k (I change it around 6k).

2) In general, diesels have far lower maintenance costs. There are less parts to break and they are generally more reliable engines. As someone else on here said the other week, gassers want to break, diesels want to drive!

Oh, and do remember that, if you were to purchase a comparable gasser (like a 3.7 KJ), your fuel costs would be significantly higher. If you do end up paying a fraction more to change the oil, you pay FAR less in the long run.

P.S. I would offer them $15k and take at $16k

very good

I change every 3000 now with the subaru's gas flat 4. I can normaly get a coupon from NTB to have it done for 19.99 + tax and disposal fee.

so I could go 6000 to 7000 with the diesel and it would still be good for it?
then what can I expect to pay? is synthetic oil that important?

sorry for being a pain I know I ask alot, I tend to want to know I am getting into something I can handle completely and I want to do my best to treat the truck well.

Definitely plan on using synthetic oil.

so far im approved for I think up to 15K so that limits me some on the one, but it is closer to home. we will see they been calling me they seem to want to deal on it. I'm only so hopeful on that one even if its the green I like better than the red one that is less and has less toys in it.

dvd nav and all that extra stuff is not something I need. it nice to have a full toy box tho :)
