My split hose lasted for ~three months with gorilla tape holding the boost in. When I finally got around to changing it out with a new OE hose, there was such a gooey mess, it took me an hour to scrub my hands clean.

How timely for this post.

On my way to work this morning, I had to punch it to get into traffic. I had tons of power and speed. I didn't hear any noise; I don't have a CEL on at all. However, when I came to the next light to make a left, there was no power. The engine seems to accelerate real slow and there is no boost at all.

Does this sound like a hose? My turbo? Something else?

I parked it and tried to rev the engine to listen for noise, but I hear nothing. It sounds normal. I REALLY don't want to go to dealership down the road as I hate them.
If you don't hear a loud hiss, it's not likely a popped intercooler hose. You may have a plugged air filter -- I plugged one, and that was the exact symptom. No power, no CEL.

An air filter won't plug up from one stop light to the next. A plugged fuel filter filter can cause a CEL-less limp mode though.

When I started the rig after work, I had no problems. I just changed my fuel filter today though as it was pretty old. I performed the ORM too and I was cruising pretty well this afternoon.

Supposedly silicone self-fusing tape leaves no residue and can be applied around an oily hose. "Rescue Tape" which sells for around $16 per roll appears to have the same specs as Nashua "Stretch & Seal" sold at Home Depot for less than $7.

A proactive approach might be to take the hoses off the engine, clean them, and then wrap them with silicone tape BEFORE they rupture.

Cool, sounds like the fuel filter did it. I wouldn't have suspected; when my filter plugged the engine shut down hard and hit the CEL. No limp mode there, that's a park mode.

This is maybe not such a bad idea! This stuff http://www.pure-silicone-tape.com/high- ... tions.html has slightly better specs than "Rescue Tape" and costs $22 for a 36' roll. I reckon that a single roll will give about 4' linear coverage on our hoses so 2 rolls would easily cover both hoses. Now if you can get a stainless steel braid to provide a reinforcing layer between the existing hose and the tape you probably have a lifetime fix.

Is the hose that goes to the turbo the $119.60 one?

Just need to know for future reference.

I put this on over the upper hose...

http://www.summitracing.com/parts/SPE-6008B/

but I'm not sure it would go on over tape also. It was real snug, took about half and hour and a lot of hand soap.

**edit** make that half an hour...

This is exactly the stuff that I was thinking of but I was suggesting a layer of tape over the braid thus embedding it rather than putting the braid over the tape.

Oh. I misunderstood. I put the braid on the outside for abrasion resistance. I noticed that under load the hose would grow in length (the center section would rise) and was worried about the hood liner (which had numerous other rub marks in it from the air conditioning lines). Later I removed the hood liner also.

Self-fusing silicone tape is available with fiberglass reinforcing. The fiberglass is added primarily for dielectric performance, but it does increase the tensile strength of the tape. The hoop stress in a hose is inversely proportional to hose thickness, so using a double wrap of tape should double the stress reduction provided by one layer of tape.

It took 2-1/2 rolls of 1" x 10' tape to do the turbo-intercooler hose. The hose had a plastic braid covering and rubber sleeves at both ends. The sleeve at the intercooler was deteriorating.
Harbor Freight has "X-Treme Tape" @ 4.99 USD (in-store price) for a 1" x 10' roll: http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/D ... mber=96807
Probably takes 6-7 rolls for both hoses.

That tape looks pretty nifty. I'm tempted to buy some and just wrap my stock hoses before they pop and perhaps they will be just fine.

Found this and just had to toss it in:

I really like this option and I bet with the SS braid covered with some of the fancy tape the hoses will last for a verrrrrry long time. Question tought, I see my hoses have a fabric braid, did you put the SS over that or remove it? How close to the end did you go...looks like cuffs or some such at the very ends.

The fabric covering was very loose and quite oily so it stayed with the old OEM hoses, now on a shelf in my garage, collecting dust.

The stainless braid goes right up to the clamps.

Gorilla tape 2" wide lasted exactly 40 miles on mine before starting to whistle b/c the pressure has found a way out. I knew it wasn't going to be a permanent repair, but I think I might give that Nashua tape a try tomorrow while I'm sitting here waiting for my theatre shows to be completed.

To tape both hoses took 6 rolls of 1" x10' 'X-Treme' self-fusing silicone tape. 2-1/2 rolls for the smaller diameter hose, and 3-1/2 rolls for the larger one.
One reviewer preferred Nashua tape because it was thinner and stretched more than X-Treme tape.

The fit of the driver's side hose at the intercooler spigot is so tight that I had to remove about 5 cm of fused tape from the hose end in order to it on.

did an oil change today
finally replaced that boost hose today also
103545 MILES !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I pulled mine off cleaned with brake clean
and wrapped with almost 1/2 roll of gorrilla tape.
probably why it lasted so long.

the rest of the roll is staying in the CRD
