Not to change direction with this thread but I'm not convinced that Toyota has actually found the problem with the accelerator. I HAD a toyota that this has happened to and when it did the pedal actually would disappear under you foot. Had nothing to do with pushing the pedal to the floor and it getting stuck. First time it happened wife got pissed at me because she thought i did it on purpose, then it happened again to her and luckily she was in the car to see what i did to stop the vehicle so she was able to get it under control. But once again had nothing to do with the pedal being pushed to the floor, the pedal would actually disappear under you foot. Almost like a electrical problem. Took it to the dealer and of course they said it was impossible to happen that way. Told service to take the car and drive it for a few days and it finally happened on the last day they were going to have it. Service guy was as white as a ghost, he couldn't believe how it would happen. They couldn't find any problem with it, I got ride of it later that same week. I have a feeling that Toyota may continue to have some problems even after this fix.

So you are saying, it was as if a ghost was pressing the pedal, or there was no return spring, or it just sunk to the floor on its own? If it disappeared it must be a magical pedal?

Yep, just like there was a gremlin under the hood. Pedal would go to the floor all by itself. Just like it disappeared under your foot. Even though the pedal didn't actually vanish into thin air :D

I have not owned a gasser in years, at least a modern one, been "driving by wire diesel" for over 10 years, so I guess they are still using a cable on gassers to open the butterfly? Does the cruise control still link up to these things as well? "Oh What a Feeling to Drive "CRASH" Toyota!" :banghead:

Just joking, but too bad for the people that have to drive these things. I am glad that you and your wife are OK. I am glad I don't have one. I guess Toyota's reign of quality is over? I hope they get this fixed before there are any more fatalities.

I have no idea if modern cars are using cables or not or if it's more senor controlled nowadays.. That is why this seems so strange but when it happened to the mechanic I knew i wasn't losing my mind as far as what was happening. It must have been Possessed(Christine) :o

WTF, now they have steering problems too.

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20100217/ap_ ... ota_recall

LOL, that is the 3 ways you control a car, accelerator, brakes, and steering. Looks like the Toyotas are going to be out of control. I will have to be on the look out for any in my driving vicinity.

Hit the brake and it popped free, no wreck, no news crews, nothing on 10:00 o'clock news, no recall.
Turned out to be my Aftermarket floor mat scooted forward.
Reached down and pulled it back 1 1/2", good to go!
Proof, CRD owners are smarter than Camry owners :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :)

I was blowing the CRD's nose once going WOT and the same thing happened. I had Mopar Jeep liberty slush mats in it. I had to trim the part under the pedal basically ruining the concept.

Had the same thing happen to me with the peddle getting stuck on the mopar floor mat, I was in traffic and didn't wanna shut it down in the middle of the road, I held the brake to control speed and make it over to the side of the road, thats when I found out if you hold the brake and throttle at the same time the jeep shuts itself down. I think its a nice safety feature incase this happens to my wife.

As for the drive by wire on gassers, I have no clue if toyota has it or not, I know ford and GM use drive by wire now. But the peddle going down to the floor on its own sounds like a faulty cruise on a car with a throttle cable to me too.

The first cable less accelerator car I drove was a BMW 750 IL.
My Wife's '99 TDI has no cable either.
Since having most fuel injected gassers have an Idle speed control system with an actuator, having to have a separate cable controlling the throttle plate is a needless expense. Almost all of the newer gassers are accelerator by wire instead of cable.

Recall! Husky liners for everyone!

I pulled my husky liner out in Baja to remove the sand and when it went back in it caught the accelerator pedal, the Jeep acted funny and I pulled over a couple of miles later. Thinking great, now I have diesel kj in Baja with a problem. I looked under the hood, nothing. I found the husky, and end of story. No time was I in any danger, that's why I doubted Toyota's floor mat BS.
