Well, Diehard is 2 bills, Redtop almost that. For 85 bucks and 3 troublefree years, the gold might be the way to go. Figures about the same cost per year anyway. Pay more now, or pay later.

yeah I guess so. I just didn't have the extra at the time to spend much more than $100 on a battery. I was not expecting it when it happened and spend mony on other things before it died. The warranty is 36 month replacement and 72 or 84 moth prorated after the 36 is up. what do the others offer? I doubt you are going to find a 72 or 84 month free replacement warranty at any price but then I could be wrong.

I haven't seen over a 36 month free replacement warranty on anything. They claim "service life", but that isn't a sure thing. Probably just a prorated thing like they all have.

The Diehard P4 is designed to last 10-12 years.I'm not 100% sure on Sears warranty on them but Odyssey has a 4 year free replacement on the PC1500(same as the sears P4),not prorated.

in no car I have ever owned has a battery lasted much longer than 4 years. I don't see the piont of a $200 battery unless you need a special battery due to extreeme cold like northern Alaska and Canada or something deep cycle due to having too much stereo or other equipment.

That's the best I heard about then. That works out to $50 a year vs $20 a year for the Gold. If you want the best though.....

Yeah you can have all the problems that come with wet cell batteries also,no science projects grow on my battery terminals :-)r .Zero corrosion on a P4 or PC1500,last time I tested the PC1500 it still pumped out over 1300cca's when the battery temp was 10 degrees.Well worth the $200 so I don't have to worry for at least 4 years where as you'll need to swap a battery by then which lead to lost time and frustration.Plus a wet cell battery will always die sooner in a diesel, they don't like high vibs since it causes internal shorts.

Oh and by the way Optima's are now junk, there top people where canned a few years ago when johnson controls took over and they now work for Odyssey and why your OE Optima's are junk.

I have a caterpillar 230-2368 in the kj. This battery is a group 65 which is just about 1/2 inches wider at the base than the oem. I had to modify the battery tray a bit and make new attachments but this monster is an industrial battery (machinery) and it cranks 880cca with a 140 min reserve. My oem was el cheapo automotive 600 cca with 120min reserve. (not even the optima) I work on an airport and it gets pretty cold and windy in the winter. Sometimes my CRD can sit in the parking lot for 15hrs straight at 0 deg F. So far, it started like a champ every time. I have also installed a solargizer to help the battery retain it's charge during those freezing days.

Please excuse this off topic slant, but when it was 0* out, how long did you wait to start it after the key was first turned on?

Just a post I saw while searching. The odyssey people in Alaska were saying the case was the same, but the guts were different. Where did you get the battery at that price? Best I've seen are in the 280 range.

*****EDIT***** Ahhh, it was Sears P-1. Here's the link...

http://www.expeditionportal.com/forum/a ... 14285.html

Some chat from Odyssey.....

I e-mailed EnerSys this weekend, their response:

David:

That is a very astute observation. We private label the Sears DieHard
Platinum batteries and they are rebadged Odyssey batteries.

Thanks.

Well it seems they price went up a bit,Summit has about the cheapest at $250.I bought mine about 8 months ago from a battery store in PA and was $232 shipped, guess I got a good deal then.Well at least you can get the Sears P4 for about $190 for the same battery.

Yea, that's what I got out of it anyway. 90 bucks cheaper for the same thing is pretty doable. Most reviews agree with you that the side mounts suck bigtime.

To answer your question BVCRD, I don't wait that long when it's cold. Just wait for the glow plugs light to go off (about 5 sec) and I crank it up. The engine sounds rough at first but I let it warm up for 30 secs to a minute and it start to sound almost normal.

I recently read that our glow plugs are on for up to 26 seconds at that temp. My wife now counts to 15-20 aand then starts it. Much easier she says to start. This is at 10,200 feet in elevation. Don't know if that makes a difference or not.

My redtop optima died after about a year. I've had my 1000/800cca battery for 3 years now and it works great with no issues. For less than 100 bucks, its one of the better purchases I've made for our Liberty. I got the battery at Advance Auto auto but had to install it myself becuase advance said, "it wasn't an approved battery for this vehicle".

The P4 from sears al la (Odyssey PC1500) has a 4-Year Free Replacement; 100-Month Prorated Limited Warranty

That's 8 years pro rated + 4 100% no question replacement. For a battery that has a ridiculous cca, is matinence free, and is sealed. It's AGM. How can you beat that?

They claim 6-8 years in typical service, but the design is for 12 years of service.

DO NOT GET this type of battery if you are using the side posts!! and don't use the side posts! (not because agm = bad side post but because this mfg side posts separate in group 34, i dont know about others)

I run the 34dt-DLG - Duralast gold - Has dual terminals (side and top) and is is the same price as the 34-DLG (just top post) for $95. The battery besides the posts is the same and a GREAT battery with plenty of power for colorado winters(800CCA), great warranty (3 year free replacement, pro-rated after that 5 more years for a total of 8 year warranty).

I have 2 of them. One in my Jeep (that was originally in my 01 GMC sierra) and the other in my 1997 corvette. I've had the one in the vette since Feb 2008 (the truck/jeep one not sure, but a bit older) and so far so good. :)

Advantage of the side posts: Can go between different vehicles (I swapped my jeep one with my truck one when i traded the truck in so i could keep the newer battery with a warranty), you can add an aux power wire from the side terminal for accessories with just a short battery bolt and not see it from the top for a clean install.

Myself personally, I've never had great experiences with maintenance free (and working at a parts store for awhile some of the oldest batteries that came in were about 8yrs old and none of them maint free), but your battery sounds good looking at their site (yes you made me curious and i looked it up http://www.odysseybatteries.com/battery/pc1500series.htm for anyones information). AND by the way the Odessey PC1500DT 34/78-PC1500 IS a dual terminal if you want the option.

Biggest issue is it a reasonable cost. Odyssey is $270.84 and Duralast is only 95.00 with similar stats (800 CCA and 8 yr prorated /3 yr free replacement). Also, how does the Odyssey get replaced, i can go to one of 8 autozones in town, have them look me up by phone number-no receipt needed, and have it swapped out in less than an hour.

Both sound like great batteries and if money was no object for me (and i didn't already have 2 duralast 34dt-dlg's under warranty) the Odyssey would be my choice, but whatever you go with, get the physically largest battery with the most cold cranking amps (CCA) you can fit under the hood and u will be good to go for a long time. :)

I totally agree with getting something good that can be exchanged quickly under warranty if needed. that is why I would never by a batter at some online place, not that's a bad battery, just that if I need to claim that warranty I want to be able to in a hurry. I would choose Advanced Auto parts or AutoZone. there are 4 of Advanced stores in town and 1 Autozone right up the road from my house. Both are open evening and weekends. There is a Pep Boys too but I have had issues there with the customer service in general and the service department so I prefer to not go there unless no one else has what I need.
