Well, got it back from the stealership yesterday, I'm reminded of the Jimi Hendrix song, ♫♫ "What if Six turned out to be Nine..."

In my car the fault code for cylinder #1 glow plug corresponds to a bad glow plug in cylinder #4. I guess when the tech found that out the last time he didn't fix the situation.

So anyways, since they had replaced that plug a little over a month ago, the second time it was free.

And still no valve damage - thrice lucky!

Are these plugs available? What kind of coin are we talking? How will we coordinate this with GDE?

Not at this time and no date set by Chrysler. No idea what Chrysler will charge. Just call us if you get the new plugs and flash through a dealer and we will reset the tune after the dealer is finished.

My glowplugs are doing something strange the light only comes on for split second, then goes off, and ive noticed tougher starts on cold mornings, no codes thrown, any ideas?

Split second glow plug activation is somewhat normal for 'in-between' temperatures. And it's also somewhat normal for tougher cranks as temperature drops. It's such a sliding slope that it's hard to say though. My starter finally gave it up this spring also. That's when you know you've slid too far.

Well my saga is continuing. First they didn't have the right parts to do the install on Monday. So I took it back in on Wednesday, and they called the hot line and suddenly they felt the urge to remove the head and check for more damage. I've been driving a rental and they wont tell me what's going on other than they need approval from a zone rep.

I drove in a perfectly functional car that happened to have a check engine light on. If they kill it there will be some high level yelling going on and they'd better be prepared to buy it back.

I finally got a semi-coherent story out of the dealership. Since they (on the third glow plug failure) felt that had to finally remove the head a look at it, they have now determined I have a cracked cylinder sleeve.

If the zone rep doesn't like me and I'm stuck with the bill, I'm being told it's a minimum $5500 bill.

Don't know what I'll do if they try to stick me with that.

The story about a cracked cylinder liner from a broken glow plug sounds kinda fishy...Have you asked to see what the removed "failed" plug looked like?

I already have two on my desk that don't have the ends on them. From the first failure months ago. So it's possible I've been driving with this condition for awhile. If it's not covered rather than spend the money myself I'll have them bolt it back together and take my chances. All it will take is a piece of electrical tape over the MIL.

I've been driving a rental minivan and it's now empty. Does anyone know where to find gasoline? I haven't purchased any in five years.

You can find it at most diesel stations :ROTFL: :-)r

The station I go to has 8 #2 pumps, 2 B5 10 or 20 pumps and 2 regular (gasoline) pumps..

Well, maybe not that lucky after all. Found out yesterday the good news.

But first the bad news: One of the three times the glow plugs failed a portion of the ceramic fell into the piston and scuffed the cylinder wall. This led to a cracked cylinder liner. (Wife mentioned a cloud of smoke coming from the back...) Soooo, I have a new long block in my immediate future. $5500 to $6500.

The good news is that the dealership (after at least seven visits to schedule/diagnose/repair glow plugs) has convinced the zone rep to cover it. Mr. Mopar is buying me a new engine! And I get to keep driving the Mopar financed rental until (and no one has any real idea of when this can happen) lumpy is repaired.

I'm not sure what I did right to deserve this good luck, but I was facing the sadness of parting with my CRD.

Wow Dan, that is good news that they will be covering it AND the rental... Obviously not good news that they have to replace the engine. Hopefully they do it right the first time for you.

If my experience is any indication, you may have that minivan for at least a month, possibly as many as 3. On the upside, when you get your CRD back, it should be a brand new truck in almost every way.

Good luck dude, we are hopeful for you.

Yeah man sounds like you narrowly avoided disaster. The kind of disaster that scares me everytime I drive mine. :grim:

One thing I would LOVE to see in the next GDE revisions is for the glowplug indicator light on the dash to stay illuminated longer. I NEVER see mine, unless it's around 0°F outside...and then it only lights up for about 1.5 seconds. I would like to see this light stay on for a lot longer... it would be a great reminder to whoever drives the Jeep to let it warm up a tad before cranking.

Well I stopped in on a Thursday and it was running, it just had a turbo underboost fault. That was Thursday Oct 21. They are in the no clue / throw parts at it mode. I'm still driving a rental.

OMG!

The list of parts (that I know of) that the dealership threw at the problem

Mopar reman long block $6500
turbocharger $2000(?)
injectors $3000(?)
EGR valve $(?)
4 (ceramic) glow plugs $120
timing belt $120
42 day rental of a minivan $1568
untold amounts of dealership labor

More than the value of the entire truck. I have therefore passed, officially, to the other side. My KJ is worth more as parts, than as a truck.

The only problem I've found is that the mechanic reinstalled the Samco CAC -> engine hose backwards. The OEM hose has directions printed on it, the Samco does not. No biggie, took a few minutes to fix.

Add in the starter and rear drive shaft from this spring and I have almost a new truck again. **edit** and a thermostat.

I must really like this thing because I have never had a vehicle that needed soooo many parts replaced before 80k miles.

Yes it's back. I guess I didn't realize how much the leather needed cleaning. My rental car had 100 miles on it when I got it, when I got back into my KJ it was rather dirty.
