First off, I would contact Chrysler HQ, tell them the whole story and ask them how to proceed? Get them involved from the start.

welp, so I just talked to the dealer who installed the timing belt/water pump/ etc, he said that he wouldn't personally own that CRD. said that it was smoking before they put the timing belt on and was "plagued by problems"... arrgh. I'm leaning more towards an impacted rocker. Do you guys think that a compression test would tattle on an impacted rocker?
How hard is it to remove the camshaft/valve cover inspect/repair/replace?
and, I know, I asked for it... :banghead:

Compression/leakdown test may tell you somthing, and can be done without as much labor to tear down to the valve cover.

Plenty of labor to tear down the valve cover, could be that you are just off a tooth on timing on the belt too. checking the engine timing may be good.

Thanks Sam, I'm in the process of accumulating parts needed for this job. just got the garage cleaned out for an extended repair job. I had jeep masters do the compression test, they said it sounded like a lower end issue, I'm leaning towards the lifters/slipped timing belt prior to the previous owner taking it in for a TB replacement. I taked to Don Davis in Arlington, they said that the PO wasn't upfront about the timing belt issue and that it was smoking/making noise before they did the TB replacement. Course I can't verify anything with anyone, so it looks like I'll just have to to the work myself and make sure it's done right. - I mean, really, it seems that no one knows how to work on these engines except for us (Lost members). I will say that I'm a heavily self trained on the SAAB engine - older ones though - SAAB 99's AND a former IHC fanatic, had several KB's and a 3/4ton. So I guess I like these quirky mechanical things; found some images of what the engine looks like inside, and what needs to be removed so there's no suprises. I'm pretty confident about it.
That said, IF there's anyone in Austin, TX who would like to hem and haw over this project, I certainly wouldn't mind the company!

galatron - if you have not already done so I'd suggest you reach out to turbobill (viewtopic.php?f=5&t=64603) who is both into the head/rockers and in Austin.

turns out it wasn't the injectors, or the turbo hoses, instead it required a top end teardown due to failed rockers and lifters possibly from the result of a slipped timing belt.
thread closed.

HI Harlan, I'm new to this group, but I'm having the same issues with my 05 liberty CRD. I have two codes that 0261 & 0267, injector #1 & #3 low voltage side fault to ground. I can't find anything wrong from the ECM to the injectors, I have 124173 mi on this without a TB change yet, black smoke and rattle when you step on it, do you think it could be the TB isssue you found and if it is and messed up the top end, what did it cost you to repair. :pepper:

In the end, I think I spent about 1837, but that includes samco hoses, new shocks, struts, some lamps, and a host of other stuff.
If I subtract out only the needed parts, I spent 450 for the rocker arms and about 28 for the injector seals. and 127 for the special tools.
It took me about 20 hours including the futzing around we did cause I misplugged the #4 and the fuel rail connectors... arrgh. they are the same so watch out!
I did all the work in my garage at the house, get two of those shop lamps for either side of the engine bay so you can see what you're doing. do a search for harlan stanley on google plus and you can see all the pictures of my engine taken apart and put back together.
Members wobbly and turbobill were excellent help as well as all the other members on this forum.
