I agree with papaindigo's last reply.
As for the fuel/water separator did not mean for that to start a debate. Some may say that is does not need to be replaced, until it starts leaking around the electrical connections or around the plunger. Well I consider it a preventive maintenance item. Some may agree, some may disagree. Everyone has their opinion.

Debates are always fun and keep the forum members on their toes. My $0.02 on preventive maintenance is to replace known problem components with upgraded components. Hence 1st gen fuel head with 2n gen and OEM hoses with Samcos both before the original component fails. I have not replaced my air box to turbo hose cause it hasn't failed yet and there is no upgrade component but I do have a new one on hand for when it's needed. GDE tune to stay ahead of EGR induced problems not to mention better power and mpg. I don't put many miles on my vehicle so I'll probably follow Sir Sam's lead and throw a new timing belt on at 10 years even if that is only 60k miles or so.

As to the 2n gen fuel head I've not heard of any failures and I don't pump the primer except when installing a new fuel filter so I think I'll leave that component alone until when it fails if ever.

Ok I did go overboard on the GDE turbo which "made" me purchase the SunCoast TC but I like to think of that as my retirement present to myself.

Ok, so what i have gathered so far,

Check the fuel filter/ fuel heater head

Check the turbo hoses, and replace with SAMCO's

I got a quote from a repair shop referenced on this sight as a trusted mechanic in Colorado, to do the timing belt and tensioner, pulley's and water pump, for $2070.

I am leaning towards doing it myself. I replaced a timing belt on a 2002 Subaru Forester, and was straight forward. How much can I expect to spend on parts, and any specialty tools for holding the cams in place?

I did search for timing belt, and most of the posts are old, about 2 years or so, and the prices I saw where about $780 for everything.

Thanks,

Given that you are in Colorado I'd recommend you PM/email Sir Sam in Ft. Collins, he has done a bunch and I imagine can give you a much better price as $2,070 sounds at least $300-400 high.

It's certainly possible to do it yourself and writeups are available, email me if you want links. Tools (critical cam pins and cam holding tool) can be rented from GDE or maybe used onsite with another member. There are some options (apparently not water pump) to OEM parts (ex. a Gates serp and timing belt are at least as good as OEM and a lot cheaper). If you shop around you can get all the parts for on the order of $500-600.

Awesome!

Thanks!! I will give Sir Sam a shout and see what happens. Ft. Collins is about 3 hours away.

Aghh, yes. Only money. That and keeping my wife happy. I hope the 06 I am looking at checks out and passes inspection tomorrow.

I had a chance to talk to Sir Sam, great guy and I am sure glad he is close by!
