When it comes to upgrading your torque converter, there are a few points of interest.

1. The lock-up clutch is the weak link. Stock TC has a spring capaicty of 300 ft*lb nominal. Make sure the new unit is designed for 400 ft*lb minimum. TC shudder occurs when the springs bottom out of their travel leading to a slip/stick of the internal clutch.

2. A larger surface area of clutch material in contact with metal will aid in holding if the springs near/hit full travel.

3. A billet cover typically means higher inertia (need to know added mass over stock). This will reduce engine response a bit, but will reduce overall noise, vibration and harshness (NVH) in vehicle. The added mass can lead to variations in the idle speed governor (undershoots/overshoots) as the low idle governors were designed for the stock inertia.

4. Low Stall- created by changes to the turbine blade angle most often. There are many variables that affect the optimum stall speed including power/torque output curve and turbo response rate. A low stall unit can help with fuel economy by reducing engine rpm for a given load. If not matched correctly for the power curve it will hinder overall performance.

If your vendor of choice has a good answer on these points, their TC will mostl likely work well for you.

The Liberty CRD is a good sized market for aftermarket TCs due to the very poor quality unit from the factory. It is feasible for 40% of the fleet to fail the stock TC during useful life.

I called Precision of Hamton, http://www.gopnh.com/, and the tech guy said they beef up the springs, however did not know what the springs specifications are. He thought the specifications were very close to stock. He also said the surface area is the same.

So it looks like I will be looking at either Suncoast.

Thanks for your help Keith!
