Thanks for the advice but I'm sticking to either the stock OEM or the GDE stage 2.

If I need a replacement, I am going to be thinking GDE myself.

Originally that was my plan but I'll be into it $3000 by the time it's done. I'm not sure I can justify twice the expense. I would love too do it.

I've been telling my wife it was $2300 the whole time but now I'm having a hard time swallowing that pill, as much as I would love to.

I just ordered it; a brand new Garrett turbo for $1025 plus shipping and tax. He said it will be ready for pickup on Monday.

Here's the info for future orders if needed:

Advanced Diesel Supply
509-535-0336

IDParts stocks it too, but about $100 more.

An update:

I found a guy that works on mostly diesel fleet vehicles and he didn't shy away from this rig one bit. I got the brand new Garrett turbo and he went at installing it. Then the studs stripped out! He told me not to worry about it and claimed it wasn't going to win. He was able to get the stripped ones out, got new ones, and installed the turbo. He was in it about 5 hours, which is more then we both originally thought but what do you do and at least its done?

I got it home, changed the oil/filter, put a new fuel filter on, and serviced it up. It now runs great. I'm just crossing my fingers it last like this for at least a month before something else wears out.

The old turbo was SHOT. It didn't explode but the shaft had lots of fore/aft play. The mechanic told me failure to address dirty air filters/restricted air flow is hard on the turbos however, that wasn't an issue with mine ( I keep up on services ). He checked the oil flow and that was great too. He said he see lots of turbos with several hundred thousand miles on them so either its the design of these that's an issue or as he put it, "it was just this turbo's time." I spoke with the shop I bought the turbo from and asked him about the cool down time. He didn't seem to act like that was too much of an issue. He said that was more of a concern in the earlier days and unless it is getting an extreme workout and then shut down hot. Normal operation wasn't really a big deal. Now don't quote me on this but its what I took away from our quick conversation. This is all this shop does is rebuild turbos and injectors and such. Take it for what its worth...

Luckily I caught mine in time. I would recommend to take the five minutes and check your turbo for play every once in a while, especially if you are having any concerns. I've been suspecting this turbo was on its way out for about the last 6 months so I've been pretty sensitive towards it.

One thing I will say, I still wish I could have justified it or at least trusted this Jeep enough to put the GDE turbo in. I'm a little hesitant to put more money then needed into it for fear that the engine will explode in the near future and that money will be gone but that GDE turbo would be darn cool.
