OK just took one for a drive in RI at a used dealer, nice little trucks they are. Has 107k on it, no idea of t-belt being done etc.

Anyhow, about a min after starting up in the cold (around 32 here) I popped off the coolant bottle cap and it popped into my hand like it was under pressure. I'm guessing that's not a good thing. Once it warmed up a bit it had no pressure under it. Tell tale sign to keep looking?

Also I know the EGR system can make the oil black, but even after a "fresh" oil change it's pretty gross on the dipstick. It's been a while since I've had a diesel with a working EGR (on purpose) but I never remember it being that bad on the Jetta I had.

Are you sure it was cold? Next time do not even start it, just open the hood and pull off the cap, it should have no pressure and maybe a little vacuum.

Tell them it has the infamous head gasket leak, and you want them to knock a couple of grand off the price?

A cold engine should not do this.

Engine was definetly cold, the doors and windows were frozen shut from the night before. I asked if they would budge on the price at all (9800) if I could find out what it needed etc etc he said no way, started listing what was done (oil change, brakes, blah blah) and it came out to 8600 so they need to make some money. Oh well search continues.

If it's any help at all - being a mere female  You can tell your OH that I love my Jeep - it makes other drivers think twice before cutting me up and the safety side of it is brilliant, an important matter with young children - I love the fact that I am higher up than in a 'normal' car so the visibility in traffic is really good. Once a Jeeper always a Jeeper   PS I agree with you about the Honda - my OH had one and I hated it :)

Run and hide. These CRD's are not worth it.

I personally disagree, it all depends on what you're looking for in a car. There are always good and bad experiences with any type/model, and as I have to admit that Chrysler is a cheap company, doing the few must mods to the crd (first being the gde tune) will make it worth. It's all about what you find worthwhile at the end, while keeping in mind this is a relatively finicky diesel engine and should be driven as a diesel engine and not as a race car (or a big Cummins truck towing huge loads). For me, the crd had been a very reliable car, it serves it's purpose perfectly, knock on wood, but I have done plenty preventive maintenance, as I do with pretty much any car I own.

Relatively finicky diesel engine? That's the biggest under statement ever. :) Sorry I don't want to tick someone off but. This engine has lots of problems. Unless you want to spend lots of money and lots of you time repairing. I'm just trying to tell the truth. There is not much to choose from SUV diesels. The Jeep Grand Cherokee CRD is a better choice. More $ but the Mercedes Benz engine is great.

Good luck

No worries, you don't tick me off :). It's your opinion, I respect that. Luckily for me, my opinion is positive regarding crd. I believe that old crd grand cherokee does not have a rebuildable engine, but I may be wrong. Mercedes in general has good diesel engines, especially the legendary om617. And you're right, very few choices for light truck diesel in us, which is unfortunate.

I was told it is not a daily driver, but now I have to convince my wife that has been driving hers daily for 4 or 5 years about this fact.

One guy trying to convince his wife to get one, another trying to convince his wife it is only her imagination that it is a great daily driver. :ROTFL:

Well we couldn't make it work, ended up getting another jetta TDI. It was less then half the price, incredibly clean w/maitenance records, and I have spare parts for it. It's an 01, 5 speed, 228k miles and runs like new, couldn't say no at $3300.

Will keep looking though, the Jetta is nice but so small inside....
