The water pump failure CAN AND WILL take out the timing and trash the rockers, and then you are looking at an additional $1000 in parts plus redoing all the labor and another 5 hours to boot.

X10... I'll be pulling my belt and feeling all of the bearings on mine at 50 & 70k just to be safe. I'll probably change them all at 80k. Cheap insurance from a possibly dropped valve, and toasted engine.
