I just hope they fit at full stuff...

You will need to work the pinch weld and throw 2" of bumpstops in the rear. But 245s fit good. Nothing like 32"+ tires

cool, thanks! the pinch welds are already hammered good from the PO, but I'll have to get the bumpstops. I'll just change gears if I don't like the ratio when I install my locker.

So, I guess most people do the clevis and top plate to make the jeep sit level versus making room for 245/75's? I already took care of that problem with heavy towing.

before OME made the 790's

- I used a Daystar front - no clevis, no additional top plate (Daystar has it's on special top)

ran 3 different 245/75/16's
-one didn't touch the pinch weld,
one occasionally scraped and
one hit every time I turned the wheel (that's when I hammered down the pinch weld)

the 245 - is the section width

but what scrapes is the tread and it will vary according to the tire design

Thanks ATXKJ, I guess it's another one of those where the tires are all different based on make and model. Like buying a pair of shoes online and hoping they fit...

I've started to second guess the Duratracs now since I really like my gear ratio with 245/75's, and I know I'll have room for chains. I haven't found anything that compares to the ice traction of duratracs, especially since they are studdable. The gear ratio may actually offset the MPG loss though, because I'll be running at a lower rpms... Expensive experiment, but I might be able to step up to Duratracs and not really lose any significant mpgs over 245/70 AT's. hmm, I'm going to tear the front end apart for JBA upper arms eventually anyhow, I could add top plate and clevis if necessary then.

If anyone knows of another AT that is good on ICE I'd like to hear about it. A lot of them are great in snow. The Hercules AT2 looks interesting.

Not sure if they are good on ice, but my next set will be cooper discoverer AT3's in a 245/75/R16. They get good reviews and the tread is not quite as aggressive as the duratracs.

It's my wife's DD, so I need them to be somewhat quiet.

Thank for the post, I read a lot of good things about the coopers, and Toyos, but they aren't supposed to be great on ice. Coopers ATW's are though, so I'll have to check them out again. Tough to find details on Coopers or anything that tirerack doesn't sell. Their site is sooo much better than everything else I've seen!

The Hercules AT2 is supposed to be great on ice and have a 50k warranty. Still looking into them more also, but like cooper, the site for them sucks.

The thing is, once mounted over the shock, the springs aren't any longer than the stock ones. Just a heck of a lot stiffer. So if you got more than 1.5 inches of lift with just springs, its because your old springs lost tension and started sagging.

flash7210 wrote:
Yes. I get it.
Before the springs are installed they are longer than the stock springs.
But once installed with the insulators and top mount onto the shock, they are only as long as the shock will allow them to be.
The extended lengths of stock, Monroe, rancho, bilstien, and OME shocks are all pretty much the same. The springs don't majically make the shocks any longer.
It's the spring rate that makes the OME springs ride higher, providing lift.
Not their uninstalled length.

Ok.....so whats your point? OME 927 or 790s will provide a lift over 1.5".......you still haven't disproved that.

I dont care how it gets the lift, it still provides a lift over your claimed amount.

My 04 has OME 927 that have over 150k miles on them, threw them on the 04 and its sitting 21.25"......hmm if my math serves me right. That 2.25" over what the 04 came with (19"+2.25"=21.25). Of course I figured that out with old school math, not common core.

My CRD with 790's, top plate, and 1/4" clevis is only at 21.5".

I think you will be fine with the 245's. I get a little rubbing with my 265's but nothing bad.

I think I have finally settled on the duratracs in 245/75's, but I just have to decide on the Moabs or stockers with spacers now. Not optimal either way, but the options are pretty limited for light wheels :banghead:

OME and Clevis with 245/75/16 Cooper SST Pros...with Mr Gasket wheel spacers for clearance. No rubbing...did not have to hammer down the pinch weld.

Thanks for that, I forgot about that size, but don't they only come in E's (LT)? I'm so spoiled with how much power I have with 245/70's that I'm not looking forward to taller tires AND a LOT more weight. hmm, the good news is that I got a cheap car for mileage now, so the CRD can now be a beast with crappy mileage

Another thought, towing 6000 lbs ATE my non LT Coopers pretty bad. The LT rubber compound is probably harder right, or is it just a stiffer sidewall? hmm, but then there's the fact that I wanted the Duratracs for ice and snow traction, and if the compound is harder, it won't stick to the ice as well :dizzy:

Thanks Darby, those are nice looking tires! How have they been on ice? I have to drive about a 15 mile stretch in the winter that is often a polished, wavy sheet of ice. It's ridiculously slick. Good to know that size is good to go. I already have the welds pounded (PO) and I have a top-plate and extra iso's on hand, so I should be able to deal with any rubbing with a few hours of labor.

Oh, will my stock UCA's be a problem with duratracs? I don't know why I didn't put in JBA ones when I replaced them. Sticker shock I guess, but now I'll be out more because I'm going to get them as soon as I have an extra $400...

I don't have Duratracs on my Liberty but have them on my 1994 3500 Ram plow truck. They were great the first winter but now that they have a season on them they aren't worth a darn. When new, the seemed to work just fine but after they have worn a bit, they certainly aren't as sticky.

My recommendation to you is put a set of Toyo Observe winter tires on in the nasty season and the Duratracs in the warmer months. The Dura's seem to do well in all types of terrain, just not winter after a season of use. I used to run Blizzaks in the winter exclusively but the prices went through the roof here in Alaska so I sourced the Toyo Observes as a cheaper alternatives. Turns out the Toyo's have performed much better than Blizzaks and have a much longer service life. So far, the life span has been triple what the Blizzaks were.

I read a lot of reviews on Tirerack saying that the 1-ton pickups were seeing pretty fast wear on the Duratracs in heavy use, but the for Jeep and 1/2 ton guys they seem to wear for ages. Yes they are only load range E in that size.

It really doesn't seem slow to me without the regear. I can still merge onto the interstate and hold long grades with no problems. Avg mpg with the new tires is 24.8 over the last 3000 mi.

That sounds like find MPGs! Is that super technical hand calculated GPS mpg, or EVIC? I could definitely live with those tires and 25ish. I should be running E's anyhow for all the rocks I drive through..
One last questions about them is: Are they also snow rated? They say that not all sizes are, and I'm worried it would be the E's with the harder compound (my assumption).

That is hand calculated, corrected for odometer error, and yes mine have the snowflake on the side.

"Thanks for the input. Have you tried the Duratracs with studs?"

NO, I despise studded tires. I know a lot of folks like them but in my opinion modern tires like the Blizzak and Observe outperform studded tires in nearly every way. I used to run studs when I first moved to Alaska but have since traded them for better, newer technology tires. If it's really bad or deep snow, wet and or icy, I'll just chain up!

Yeah, I read a big article that said the new ones were so close to studs that it's almost a wash. I just figure if you can have a duratrac + studs, it would be one easier winter before I pop the studs out.

But, if they're good enough for Fairbanks, they'll do just fine in Idaho. Heck, I see Alaskans that winter here for a "break" from the cold
