Can anyone tell me if this looks like a factory original oil drain plug? It takes a 17mm socket wrench.

Yes, it looks to be the OEM plug with an aluminum sealing washer. Factory used a copper sealing washer.
The OEM plug used a Straight Thread PF 3/8-19 metric plug. Since the threads were not tapered, it requires a sealing washer.

It can be replaced with a Fumoto F-102 PF-3/8 DRAIN VALVE if your threads are still in good condition.
Fumoto also has a safety locking clip now that will safely lock the valve in the closed position.
Part No. LC-10 SMALL LEVER CLIP FOR F-SERIES VALVES :D

I'm not very knowledgeable on thread sizing, but this plug has a diameter of roughly 5/8" / 16mm. Not even close to the replacement plug that came up when we searched at the auto parts shop. My best guess at this point is that the plug is from a Subaru (also a 5/8" plug).

Based on what you have stated, it appears it has been tapped out to an oversize thread. Any good machine shop should be able to measure your plug with a thread pitch gauge and tell you what exact size and thread is required....
Fumoto has a thread & size chart on their web page where you can match your thread & plug size once you determine what is required...

Just read this thread. You may cause a great deal of premature wear running non TD rated oil. Other oils don't deal with the soot load correctly. I would change it immediately and just consider it a nice flush :2cents:

Here the days you could buy oil labelled for petrol engines or diesel engines has long gone. All the leading brands seem to say suitable for diesel including turbo and petrol. I have done a search for Mobil 1 but the stuff says the same, suitable for both.
Synthetic oil is just mineral oil that has other chemicals added to improve its ability?

My first post. Been reading for a couple years and forgot my username and all that. Saw that there s also a thread under stripped oil drain plug. I'll copy and post there too. So I'm long ways from home. Got coolant leak and find a shop to get it in. While there decide to have an oil change too. Mechanic finds a solid washer with the drain plug, says the threads are pretty lousy and puts an aluminum crush washer in place. No leaks day 1, day two it's leaking. Anybody know of a jeep shop in the Front Range ( Denver, Fort Collins, etc. ) that might install a fix like the Fumoto? Oddly enough, there were n leaks before this change. Thanks.
