That's the problem, it seems that the newer TDI's aren't as reliable as the old TDI's. If I'm going to buy new, I want something that is reliable and doesn't cost an arm and leg to repair it.

I think they were looking to find something RELIABLE with good mileage.

The CRD is quite capable at certain things... But because it is a Chrysler, reliability isn't one of them.

I have an 06 Jetta with the PD, 125K, when I did my timming belt at 100k my cam looked like new. I use MobileOne TDT 10w-40 and have never let the dealer do the oil changes. Great car, fun, and great mileage!

BTW the VW TDI guys didn't have much at all to say about the CRD. But I figured I was pushing the Jetta a little hard pulling the boat and trailers.
Now that I got the CRD, I got a bigger boat :D

I have the 2006 TDI with the "Direct Shift Gearbox" and the car works fantastic. Got 175K on it, drive 110 miles to work everyday, AC works fine here in Phoenix. I blocked off the EGR and got a Mark Malone Tune for it and it is great. No more CEL, actually squeels the front tires when stepping on the skinny pedal. At 75-80 MPH, I get around 43-48 MPG too!
I do my own service (7.5K on engine oil using Shell Rotella T6 Syn, DSG tranny every 40K. Made my own service tools for it. Cheap. Got info off of forums).

I bought mine off of Craigs List and would do it again in a second.

If the goal is saving $, I'd go with a base model prius. Its cheaper than the VW, it will be much more reliable and gets a little better mileage. I own and love diesels but have been really surprised with the two Prius we have owned. I've put two VW diesels in other cars, but the VW cars/vans I've owned were nightmares. The dealers were horrible. Parts took a long time to get in. I love the new TDI wagons but I cant imagine dealing with VW and I know it will have more issues than a new Prius.

I'd be curious if you looked at your truck getting 22mpg vs a new prius vs a new TDI. If you took into account tax, DMV fees, insurance and a payment, I'd guess your truck would be the best choice (for least $), then the prius, then the TDI.

Show me a Prius that can survive 250k miles on the original equipment (and battery pack), and I'll show you a stack of VW TDIs that already have.

The people that complain about the 01M auto transmission in the 99-04 Jettas... I don't think they took care of them. The concept of "lifetime" fluid is complete CRAP, and that is the largest contributing factor, I would have to say. Those engines however, will easily do that kind of mileage with only basic maintenance.

Ha! I love mine, too, but a friend who was moving up to the mountains said, "should I get one?" to which I answered, "eh, they're awesome but you're going to be a little far away from support if you need it."

There are tons. If I had to pick one, I'd say go find a prius taxi and chances are it will be at that point. Granted, the traction battery will be going somewhere between 200 and 300k and closer to 200k but I havent had the luck you mention with VWs. To be honest, I wouldnt consider a TDI that much more reliable than the VM in our little projects once you "fix" that stuff that Jeep should have done up front. Take a european VM Liberty and I'd say its on par with a new TDI, neither of which are on par with toyota reliability.

Great thing about the traction battery is its not that much to replace (now, this wasnt the case years ago) and its not too hard to replace yourself. Try to fix a DSG for $2k or less or on your own.

I decided not to take the job transfer. Even though I would be making $15,000 more annually, the extra time spent on the road and in the office wasn’t worth it to me. If I were still in the market for a fuel efficient vehicle, I would consider the VW diesel. but in all honesty, I’d probably spend the money and buy the new Grand Cherokee diesel.

That would be a VERY VERY bad idea for two big reasons:

They are NOT more efficient than the existing CRD, because they are in a Chrysler, and in addition to the dismal aerodynamics... Are WAY heavier than they should be for some unknown Chrysler-specific reasons.

They are also rarer than honesty in politics, parts are even harder to come by b/c Daimler is basically REALLY pissed with how poor the GC has been for the reputation of the Merc engine and engineering... B/c Mopar just doesn't give two sheets about them, they aren't keeping any of the parts in stock, and even fewer of the dealers have ever seen one than have seen / touched the CRD.

RUN RUN RUN from that idea, it would be jumping head first into a bottomless money pit.

geordi, I'm talking about the 2013 Grand Cherokee that's rated for 33 mpg.

Ah, I didn't know there was a new one coming out.

Nice rating, what is the price point? Is it still something ridiculous like the almost-an-M-class price of the last one?

To be honest, I don't know much about it. Here's a quick google search: http://www.autoguide.com/auto-news/2012 ... -2014.html

3.0 L ZF 8-speed? it's gotta be in the blue-tec price range. I'd look for a used tdi first.
