Here we go??? Not the same oil. SORRY.... Don't believe me? ASK MOBIL. They will tell you not to use it!! MOBIL will tell you to use only 0W-40 in any conditions!!

That's the FACTS!

Sorry, no, and that is not what I said.

Mobil will tell you to ASK THE MANUFACTURER and use whatever they have specified in the owners manual because... Surprise, surprise, Mobil doesn't want to get sued.

Lawyers and fears of lawsuits aside, let me be abundantly clear: The graded WEIGHT of the oil that the number represents, is either a normal-operating-temperature weight, OR it is a WINTER weight measured when the oil is below freezing of 32 degrees Fahrenheit or 0 degrees Celsius. An operating engine will switch the oil's grade as it warms up.

Above freezing - If the oil is weighed as a 40 weight, then it is a 40 weight.
Above freezing, an oil that is rated 0W-40 should pour and flow exactly the same as an oil that is rated 15W-40 because they are ABOVE FREEZING. Differences in quality from manufacturer to manufacturer are a separate conversation. If they are rated 40, then they are equivalent when above freezing, no matter what the xW rating is.

If you want to talk about the reasons for using a 0W weight versus a 5W for BELOW FREEZING operations, then yes, there are differences and reasons to choose one or the other. The owners manual for the CRD specifies that a 5W-40 is acceptable if a 0W-40 cannot be sourced. In places where below-freezing temps are normal, this should not be a problem. The stores should stock the appropriate grade of winter weighted oil. Once the engine heats up however, the oil is back to performing as a simple 40 weight.

Gordi is correct! And here in the deep south we can normally count the days we have below freezing on two hands. We tend to run heaver weight oils in our vehicles as cold starting is not much of an issue. Up north in the colder climates I could see where lower weights may be needed for cold starts.
Bottom line, buy what you like and feel comfortable using. :goink:

"like you said" and then you just use a nonsense emoji? That isn't saying much.

Maybe you aren't good at reading comprehension, so I'll try to type this slower: The owner's manual specifically states that 5w-40 is acceptable if 0w-40 is not available. I have only ever used Rotella T6 or Mobil 1 Delvac (also known as Turbo Diesel Truck) and both were a 5w-40 oil. Both are acceptable according to the engine manufacturer AND the owners manual from Chrysler. There are no 0w-40 oils sold in non-snow country, because it doesn't get below freezing more than 5-10 days each year.

The oil itself was not a factor in either engine failure. Many dozens of members here use exactly the same oils with zero problems. Thanks for the attempt at trolling however.

This is not exactly correct as the graded weight (40) is based on the viscosity in cSt at 100C (210F), not just above freezing. The 15W40 will be higher in viscosity until it warms up to 210F. 5W40 & 0W40 will have a closer viscosity profile.

If you want to talk about the reasons for using a 0W weight versus a 5W for BELOW FREEZING operations, then yes, there are differences and reasons to choose one or the other.

Agreed because the differences between a 0W & 5W are not important until we reach -20F.

I also use Rotella T6 and Truck Turbo Diesel.

LOL, I bought 61 gallons total.

I plan on running Amsoil European in the Jeep through out the warranty period for the new engine.

Does the Mobile 1 5w40 also meet the engine specs? Can I run it during the warranty time for the new engine?

I have plenty of other diesel engines in which to use the rest of the oil I bought

Agreed, I don't believe its like an on-off switch where the oil siddenly changes viscosity at 32F. In fact, I believe a 5W, 10W, and 15W-40 may have slightly different viscosities even at operating temperatures due to differences in the makeup of the oil to allow them to be thicker or thinner at low temp. They all still fall into the specification for a 40 weight oil but are not exactly the same at operating temp.

FYI, Mobil 1 0W-20 and 0W-30 oils are actually higher viscosity than their 5W counterparts at temperatures above -20F(or something extremely cold like that). They advertise that its better for gas mileage but if you looks at the specs you will see it's thicker at most normal air temperatures.

That's 38.73 oil changes

38.73 x 6250 mile oil change intervals ..... that amounts to 242,062.5 miles worth of oil changes.

You're going to need to rent out storage space.

LOL

LOL That ain't nothing. Total mileage for vehicles in our drive - About 1,700,000

Plus a backhoe, 2 lawn mowers and I really wish I had a diesel welder/generator or at least a diesel generator. And maybe a tractor and a gator and a mini diesel dump truck and ....

Hell, I have 11 gallons of the stuff... and 4 gallons of T6. I'm set for quite a while. I usually run 0w40, but at the price that the T6 and TDT have been lately, I stocked up. I run it in my Volvo 240, and will also run it in my Quantum eventually... once I get it running... FWIW, I would rather the 0w40, just personal preference... but I have several customers with CRD's who have over 300K using 5w40 without any trouble. Maybe they were lucky. I do believe, like any diesel, these like to be run. They do not like to do short trips or stop and go. No diesel really does. They heat up and cool down more than a gasser, and that breaks down oil, forms condensation, and gunks up piston rings... this causes wear. I have seen it countless times in many different diesel engines. The ones that do longer runs do not suffer this issue. I think that is the key here. I run mine 60 miles at a time in most cases, sometimes more... usually not less. YMMV.

Also, to clarify the differences between Mobil 1 TDT and Mobil Delvac 1 ESP (both 5W-40). They used to be the same oil years ago under CI-4 rating. When they went to CJ-4 there is slight difference in the oils, with Delvac being higher flash point and handles soot loads even better than TDT (info gleaned from reading around various forums). The consensus is that the Delvac is a superior oil, and TDT is also excellent (Delvac can be run for long drain intervals as well, though I don't think I'd ever risk that on the CRD).

Not as many people run the Delvac because it is generally a big rig and tractor oil and tends to be more expensive, usually $35-40/Gallon. But if you are comfortable using TDT, this is even better. UOAs with the stuff have been very good for TDI users (even with 15k+ OC intervals), and there are a few people here who use it as well.

You can buy Delvac at the truck stops, I haven't seen it at the local parts store where I'm sure it would be cheaper than the Flying J. I used that on my CRD and also on my TDI when I needed some, it is a great oil.

Just ordered 5 gallons through Pepboys with their 30% off coupon. Free shipping to home, and if the rebate goes through it will end up costing about $50.

Interesting, how did you get free shipping to home? I had to do in store pickup to get that price I think. It's a great deal.
