I'm giving the Amsoil 15W40 synthetic diesel a try right now. Matter of fact, I was on the way to NAPA to pick it up 2 weeks ago when the CEL came on for the MAF sensor.

From looking at the numbers, it actually has a slightly better TBN rating than Shell or Mobil 1 5W40. Not much, we're talking 11 and change compared to 12 for Amsoil.

Main reasons for trying it are to see what effect if any on carryover rate into the intake, and what effect on fuel mileage. However, now that we're talking a new EGR and possibly updated programming, that may throw any MPG comparison out the window for the time being.

I notice in your Signature you've got B20. Do you make a steady diet of it? Just thinking the reduced soot should have helped your EGR valve. Or maybe it prolonged it  On the excess oil in the intake plumbing, does your pro-vent catch most of it?

Oops, sorry. It was your MAF sensor that went out

Nope, you were right. At first it was just the MAF sensor code, but within 100 miles it was also throwing two additional codes for the EGR valve. I'm thinking it IS actually the EGR valve in this case, not the air flow control valve, primarily because it it threw the MAF sensor code first, then the two EGR codes (ie, a gradual failure), it still was getting decent fuel mileage, only noticeable signs were a lot of black smoke on any throttle change and quite a lot of delay on the throttle on accel and a lot of throttle required on hills. Prior to taking it to the original dealer and finding the other two codes, I checked out the AFC valve and my intercooler hoses. AFC valve was clean and still working, hoses were still nice and clean with no oil. This was after it threw the CEL for the MAF sensor. IMHO, the MAF sensor is fine, it's the EGR valve causing the codes from the imbalance in air flow.

Other than the first 800 miles, and a 3K mile trip to TX (11900 miles total) I've made a steady diet of B20, with the idea of reduced soot in mind. I'd tend to think it did prolong it's life, along with the Provent and keeping the oil out of the intake. 20% reduction in sulfur ain't much, but it's better than the other crap we have for fuel locally. Given the gradual way in which it failed, and the gradual effect on driveability, I'd have to say that, yes, running B20 and a Provent did help.

From what I've seen of the Provent, for the first 2 or 3K miles until the filter element gets loaded up with oil, you'll still have some oil mist making it's way thru, based on checking the outlet hose. But for the last 5K miles on mine, the outlet hose has been bone dry. I tried wiping out my intercooler outlet hose and the intercooler stub tubes with a rag soaked with starting fluid before taking it in for the EGR replacement, I didn't get ANY oil residue on the rag, at least 5K miles since the last time I checked them.

Joe I hate to whack you up side your head but it is not about the precieved thin oil used in CRD.

In a mineral based oil, the only thing that flows like a 10W at cold temps IS a 10W. Thus when a 5W-40 is made, one begins with a 20,000 gallon vat of 5W oil then you add VI improvers (plastic coil springs) which expand when heated, shrink when cooled. Thus the 5W oil has the viscosity of a 40W at operational temps, a 5W when cooled..

OK Oldnavy, I want you back on the stand for a minute.

I live in the north country and got my CRD in November. I checked the oil a couple of times then all of a sudden at 5K I was down a quart. Yes there was some in the hoses and I was reading those here who said to move up to 5w40 and that was my intention before reading this. I haven't burned a drop since the 6K change and I am nearly at 12K now. What you say does make sense but might that mean that the synthetic runs a little too thin at cold ambient temps? Thats when I lost mine! :?:

Not really likely, but I guess it could happen. Most likely it has to do with break-in of the pistons, rings, cylinder walls during that period. The Mobil 1 0w-40 has a lower volatily range then most 5w-40 synthentic diesel oils and that could have worked with the break-in to have some oil loss. In some cases I wondered if people didn't check oil to soon after shut down and added oil when the engine actually didn't need oil added, or like in my engine the dipstick does not show full when oil & filter is changed and the proper 6.4 qts are added. Our CRD is filled to proper amount of oil at oil & filter change and the oil will be about 1/4 inch below the factory mark on the dipstick. Most modern engines will suck off the over fill very quickly and the stop and not use any more oil, I have had 3 cars that would do that when over filled. So I never bring it up to the OEM mark and have marked the dip-stick to show correct amount and it never needs any added, but it is always showing about 1/4" low on the stick.

How about this for a testing opportunity. The dealer dumped my fresh 5W40 Rotella today to put in factory fill 0W40 to do an oil consumption test. The Provent is hooked-up and draining into a bottle. They were also supposed to install fresh CAC hoses. If what most claim is true, I should get a lot of 0W40 in the drain bottle and atleast in theory have dry CAC hoses. Will know quickly how much oil is getting boiled off and into the bottle and if any oil is getting past the turbo seals.

NO EGR issues for me @ 15k but I did just have the tranny TSB done. Went to my dealer as it was shifting odd and told them about the tranny TSB they declined to do it. Well the CEL came on and whadya know it threw a tranny code. Low line pressure or something and it put the tranny into limp in mode.

My conversation went something like this.....

So last time I brought it in with funny tranny shift issues and you DID NOT do the TSB on the tranny filter and that is why it's broke this time????

(dealer)No...well...ummm....

Ok then. Thanks.

(dealer) Would you like a free oil filter?

You know I should take photos of the same areas you guys and gals are having issues with and seeif I have the same issues. Maybe it has something to do with the fuel in the US. Mine has 6 miles on it in the US and every tank except the partial from the factory is all e-spec fuel.

I have an 05 CRD (I think its a May or June 05 build date). About to turn 11,000 and so far it has not been back to the dealer for anything. I do my own maintenence. Keeping fingers crossed...so far I've been VERY pleased with it. My neighbor 2 houses down just got one for his twenty something daughter after talking to me about mine and she loves hers.

Mine has gotten used hard too....mostly all short trips, stop & go, lots of cargo in the back, some minor off-road, and some heavy towing (4000 to 4500 lbs.). It does everything I ask it too!!

05 CRD Limited, one EGR replacement and a busted motor mount. Trans and TC have been fine. Dealer refused to do TSB's as nothing has gone wrong yet. I wish I could get them to reconsider.

I beleive that it's made for European market. Not sure though. Anyway, is there a difference?

Don't know for sure, but the theory is that US programming is different for emissions reasons.

I'm not sure but I beleive that we use California Emission regulations in here.
