Ok, ok, I am getting the drift here. You are not changing a IP timing in the same way as you do on a VW, but by changing the electronic timing point on the crank you do change the IP timing somewhat, but there is other changes also involved.

Ok, does that mean that it is most likely a programming problem then and not a simple mechanical problem? Something has to be timing the injection and telling injectors how long the spray duration last, is that the CP3's (not sure of the meaning of CP3) and can it be changed somehow?

Could be a programming problem.....I'd kinda doubt it, but you never know. If the common rail pressure is lower than specs at any given throttle position, I could see the potential for lower power and low mpg because of less atomization of the fuel. Who knows....there could even be an issue with carbon build-up on the injectors as well.

Lots of interesting reading here :

http://www.turbocompressori.net/common_rail.htm

The pics may help you understand how our CP3's work as well.

A quote from the above site :

"The pump does not require the phasing since the instant and time of injection are being entrusted to the control unit, which manages the opening of the injectors."

Very interesting reading and yes the problem with vehicles with poor fuel mileage may very well be anything from a bad CPU to the little Pressure Regulator Valve. This valve is what I suppect would/could be a real culprit for a vehicle with poor MPG's, but no really noticable seat of the pants loss of power.

That link posted is excellent info site for how things work in CRD engine.

If the fuel rail pressure drops too low, below what our "trusted" ECM thinks is appropriate for conditions, it'll throw a CEL and most likely the P0093 code for Contaminated Fuel.

If you go way back to the thread on my first instance of getting bad fuel, someone posted a link to a site explaining how OBD II systems throw codes. For the "bad fuel" code, it basically said the ECM would compare programmed with actual fuel rail pressure and if the difference was beyond a certain point below what the ECM thought was necessary, it would throw the CEL indicating a problem with the fuel system.

However, from my experience, it seems to take a LOT of difference. When mine finally threw the CEL, the fuel filter was so clogged that even trying to back it out of the driveway killed the engine.

To me, it is entirely plausible that something could be happening with the timing and fuel rail pressure, not bad enough to cause the ECM to throw a red flag, but far enough out of whack to be killing your fuel mileage.

if nothing else check with dealer and find out what the price is for the Pressure Regulator and switch them out if you can.

The trip was lots of open road but about 40 miles was city and mountain roads driving slow and stop and go. My EVIC was reading 27.2 by the end of the day. I have about 11K miles. To boast from 21.8 to 27.2 I had to have been doing quite a bit at over 30 MPG for the open road portion. None was at freeway speeds, most at around 60 mph.

Check your mileage by hand I'd would be skeptical since my EVIC reads 1.5 to 2 mpg higher than I am really getting. I average about 19 everyday driving. Best tank was 27.6 and worst was 15.3.

And the first sign of this would have been from the crazy loss of power and the engine shake? I went and had the CEL that was thrown read and the only code that came up was for O2 sensor. I could see the ECM trying to compaensate for the rough idle and maybe throw the timming off. I guess Ill drop her off Wendsday and have the dealer check it out. Im glad I took the video, gives me proof to show them, I hope they dont try to tell me that the rough idle is as "normal" as the oil in the intercooler.

Its wierd too, cause before the tank goes past half way I can get over 200 miles out of her, then the second half of the tank drains and I can only get maybe 100 miles. Is this normal for most everyone? It makes me happy to see 250-260 miles on the first half and then the tank emptys with 300-340 miles on it, and thats with it turning on the low fuel light. Takes every bit of 19 gallons to fill her back up too.

Are you really trying to say that you are at 250-260 miles at half tank and then 80 miles later your low fuel light is on? Even if that is so that would be 17.89 mpg...more than you have been claiming to get. I have been trying to give you the benefit of the doubt on your posts in this thread but they bounce all over the place.

Might have to do with the auto-shutoff on the pump as well. I have squeezed as much as 2.1 gallons extra in the filler neck after the pump auto-shuts off. Sometimes, at the same pump, I can only get 1 gallon, other times, 1.5 gallons - all depending upon foaming durring fillup.

Hmmmmmm.....

When my low fuel light is on, and I top it off until it's pooling in the top of the filler neck - not draining down at all, I get every bit of 21 gallons in it.

I do know my fuel gage does not behave in a linear fashion. My half tank indication is really only a third tank remaining.

On most of the tanks I run going from FL to LA I get about 210-260 on the tank depends on the speed im going, but yes its true that I get only about 100 miles out of the rest of the tank. Infact My odomiter is at 198 miles right now and i have about a 1/16 of a tank till half, and I bet by the end of the weekend when Im done driving to the beach and back it will top off at 300-320 and be done.

Maybe I should just drive till half full and top her back off, I do try and sqeeze as much as I can to the next dollar, fill, foam, fill , foam untill its an even number on the bill. Most the time its between 18-20 gallon fill up. I leave the engine on while I fill up, I get foam and then it gets sucked back in and then I fill up somemore and then its sucked back in, I only do this till a round dollar amount, but some times it take a while for it to let me pump out the extra part of the gallon.

I dont know why you doubt me on this, I have nothing to gain from making up a bunch of stuff about my bad gas milage.

And like I said it has been just recently that Ive only got less than 300 on a tank, use to get closer to 350 but its been a slow drop down hill for me.

If it would make it worth more to you I can take a pic of my next fill up with the odomiter reading and the receipt...??

Here is a quote from a post I had back in March

"Ive seen my mpg drop every tank it seems, I can barley get about 300 miles out of one tank and thats mostly highway miles @ 60-70mph and very little round town stuff.... I do have tons of oil in the intercooler hose though, who doesnt right... I do have bigger tires but I dont think they kill it that bad the mph are right on target with my gps. Any thoughts?"

LINK

"yeah i didnt notice because it was same as the rest of the diesel around here, about 2.85 i think,
Im just wishing I could find something that would help my 15mpg issue."

LINK

Ive been saying this for a while.

I did get only 17mpg once. Barely made it 310 miles before I had to fill up. Don't know why it happened. I only average 20-22mpg now, so if I don't top it off at the pump, and fill up reading about a quarter tank, I'm barely hitting 300 miles, but my gage is not that accurate. I have caucluated several times that my last quarter tank on the gage is only 2.5 to 3 gallons before the low fuel light is on. And when the low fuel light is on, I can squeeze 21 gallons in it, so it's EMPTY.

Maybe your EGR is sticking open?

Id be willing to accept any solution or fix at this point, Between the slugisness and the poor fuel economy I dont know what to do, I think Im just going to take it to the dealer after the weekend and show them the video of the engine and the past 4 or 5 fillup slips and tell them the milage Ive been getting. I write my total miles on most the slips so i have the records, problem being trying to find the slips. LOL

Let me add, I just went riding with the LA4x4 club and the LOST guys up there, To my dads house in Slidell from my house in orlando its a little over 600 miles, I have to stop 3 times to make it there, and thats doing the 70mph speed limit. and when I get to his house I notice that the last tank I fill up is about 50 miles out in Gulf Port, and when I get to his house its still on full, it wont budge off the full mark for about 60-80 miles normaly, intown or interstate. then Ill get to the half way amrk ad it will be about 210-250 or so and then empty by 300-310 or so. trust me it doesnt make any sense to me either.

I've searched on here and found people report this thing runs great with EGR stuck closed, and great mileage too.

So, maybe yours is stuck partially open, not enough to throw a code, but enough to kill your mileage some. Just a guess...

The other guy dude. Hey I left the funny face off, it is meant as a laugh at your comment.

Just noticed your post about oversized tires, what size did you go with? The extra weight of the tire (rims?) the extra width would cause extra wind drag as well as rolling resistance, if tire is lower it speeds up the odo and you show more miles then you actually travelled. This is something most people never take in to account, and if that is the case maybe your mileage is not as bad as you think.

All that said, from the way you talk I assume you have not made the tire size mistake and it has to be something wrong with the CRD, such as a fuel pressure problem maybe or as posted above the EGR is stuck open.

I already confirmed with most the toher guys that have the MTRs (on stock rims) that they still get pretty good milage, and like i said before in this post I have my gps hooked up most the time on interstate to track speed and milage, just for this reason. My speedo is right on, and the gps is with in a few miles (under 5) of my odomiter, which could be from loss of birds or being stoped and the gps still tracking. I took my roof rack off to pick up the loss in resistance  LOL

side note, I wasnt being rude with my comment, Im being serious, I dont know what its going to take to convince some people of my milage? I already offered to loan her out and let someone else drive her.

Well I was going to break out the scan tool this weekend to check the pressure, it gives a read out for this, Ive seen it before but I dont know 100% for sure what it was so I cant reply to that, the EGR on the other hand , well Ill let the dealer try that one out.

these are good suggestions, which answers the very first post on this and that was "is it dealer time for me" Im guessing it is. *shutters*

as far as the ECM going out of whack Im thinking the SP mod might help tune out the pressure issues, if they exist. or maybe it might throw it even further off? I really want one to test beween eco mode and power modes. I was planning o spend a day on the dyno with it.
