If a nice letter gets posted in this thread I'll print it out, sign it and mail it in.

So far I have not had any problems with mine.

I do have to admit that all the problems I hear about make me nervous since this is primarily driven by my wife.

Sure can bring on a level of paranoia without perspective. There is not one vehicle that has ever been made that didn't have a small percentage of lemons and such.

I have to admit, all of these "the CRD is a COW" post can make anyone think that they bought themselves a vehicle that is about to give them a barbed wire enema. When you take into account the number of people who frequent a forum like this and then stack that up against all CRD and gas Liberty owners, the fear factor is diminished.

Remember... just like the evening news only shows the negative because it gets better ratings, the bad news bears on this forum get the most space. Those of us that don't have horror stories to tell don't contribute to the negativity, and no one would be interested if all the posts were "I have a great CRD, no problems". :D

Regarding repair parts. When I was shopping for a CRD in late May, I went to a dealer on the west side of Columbus, Ohio and they had one CRD in stock. But they took the master cylinder out of it to fix a customer's car  That is really a sad state of affairs  Not to mentiion there were oil stains all over the seat. So there was a brand spanking new CRD who's brakes might not ever be right again

I know the feeling. I miss my old '66 GTO. White with black vinyl on the hard top (not the post hard top). It had the 2-speed auto transmission and it was fun. :(

I fear this is correct. They not only dropped the CRD, but they dropped it EARLY. VW is over producing 2006 diesel models to supply the market next year. Jeep could have produced until the end of this year, but the stopped early, even earlier than the gas 2006 Liberty.

And I don't buy the "we ran out of engine" theory because DC said they could get as many engines as they wanted if demand was there for them.

I think you will find this correct. To first tout it as a hot seller (double their expectations) then abruptly drop it only make business sence if the margins are low and/or the $$$ of the warranty claims are high. It is an interesting piece of work that is worth keeping. Now, if I could only get mine straightened out.

BTW: Judging by my meeting the DC's reps a few weeks ago, this group letter idea is a waste of time. They will respond to specific complaints on a specific vehicle if you write them. They weren't at all interested in listening to complaints about general issues such as a wet CAC causing other problems or rate transmission failures. That's the reason my vote would be no.

I don't think sending this letter could possibly hurt but, I doubt it will get much attention.

My 05 is currently at the dealer waiting for a new transmission @17,000 miles. Of course the torque converter is 'backordered' so they must be replacing a lot of them!

I think down the road (after warranty period) the CRDs will have to be modified with higher quality parts to stay on the road and that will cost a lot of money but could be worthwhile to preserve a unique piece of Jeep history.

I had to wait 2 weeks for a dealer appointment for the P1104 code (see other thread) which turns out to be..the ERG. When I made the appoitment, and when I showed up, I told them it was going to need to be replaced. They noded and said whatever. By the NEXT day, they called to tell me that it did indeed need a ERG valve, and that it was on "back-order". Hopefully re-designed.

Meanwhile, the mechanics said that the CCV goo was "nothing to worry about" but ordered me a new hose! Apparently brains run short down there. Elephant mod in place for now whileI wait for "back ordered" parts.

Recognize the reason that they will not "initially" respond to a group letter is that they are playing the "delay is the deadliest form of denial card." Another reason might be that we have not shown a pattern of neglect/intention. I think that my message earlier drew on an initial pattern. From a legal perspective they might choose to ignore anything that is not specific since specifics are for individual requests -- the divide and conquer tactic  .

If the letter were to make it into the hands of the media they would find more CRD owners exposed to the fact that they are not alone -- not a good place for the company who doesn't want to respond to a pattern of design defects. Further, if there is ever a class action suit, it would certainly not look good that they refused to be responsive.

Hence, I think that if a good letter is drafted and the group was persistent, DC would be encouraged to be responsive. Bad things happen when righteous people remain silent :( .

Wow, lots of bad blood. Everybody kiss and make up. I don't have the EGR valve problem... yet. But I know lots of people do and feel no need to bash them for being honest about it. When I took my CRD in to the dealer, the mechanic saw the CRD and walked right up to me and said... "EGR valve?" Not a good sign. No, there are still some bugs to work out, and I expected that. But the real problem is DCX, not this vehicle. They don't want to fix it, or admit anything is wrong. You should have seen the stack of Liberty warranty work the mechanic showed me that was in for just the day I was there:

1. EGR valve (CRD).

2. Tranny studder and throttle body reprogram (recall- both on my libby CRD).

3. 3 gas Libbies with bad ball joints (on one, the wheel came off in the drive way!).

4. One gas libby with failed front diff.

And that was just ONE day. Lucky, I have a pretty good dealer. I still get the B.S. from the "service" rep, but at least the mechanics want to fix stuff right the first time. I have had this thing 6 months-- I love it. But DCX needs to learn service and how to stand behind their product. I know that I am going to have to fix these issues, because DCX is not going to address them:

1. Old Navy CCV and clean the hoses (replace).
2. New ball joints (Moog's or if SuperLift ever makes it here and replaces them).
3. Front Diff (still not solved, ring is a temporary band aid-- needs steel case).
4. Tranny studder (I will buy a beefy aftermarket TC... and hope they fix the software programming).
5. Hoping that ultra low sulfur fuel fixes EGR issues.

I will support the letter writing campaign. Perhaps somebody should draft a letter that we can print out, add our personal info (VIN, etc.), and send? I'm concerned about future DC support of the CRD, and after warranty repairs and cost. The letter may not resolve the issues, but at least DC cannot say in the future that they were not aware of the problems. The letter's author should be copied on each letter submitted so an accurate count can be maintained. Once we get a healthy number of letters submitted, and don't get a reply from DC in a reasonable time, then a press contact should be made.

OK, I guess I'm NOT a whiner, because I'm I' just going to state the truth.

- I love my CRD Libby, it's my third Libby
- First EGR went at 25K miles
- I've had the tranny studder and safe mode more times than I can count
- Air Flow Control Valve and EGR just went again at 30K miles
- Part is on back order for SIX weeks
- That is ridiculous (oh my, am I whining!?)
- I believe there are design AND training issues
- I want my Libby fixed correctly, because I love my Libby
- I think I'll write Dr. Z

I think sending this letters to Dr. Z would be an interesting idea. I just heard a radio commercial in his funky German accent pushing DC quality & German engineering since their merger. What is his address?

On a more serious note, Jeep doesn't want to buy these back. I sent a detailed and very legal looking letter to the owner of the dealer threatening to sue them for repurchase and it is producing results, at least on my issues. It's slow, but it is working. Fortunately, my issues are not as severe as many have reported on this forum and are easily correctable.
