I have no problems with the cost of diesel being a big higher than RUG. I just made a 1000 mile round trip pulling my trailer. I logged 25.1mpg towing the trailer while my Ford Explorer V6 driving friend logged 11mpg.

That's good stuff! :)

How does the price of diesel compare to the price of premium gasoline in the UK and Europe?

For 40+ years (my adult lifetime) in the US, diesel was ALWAYS around 10% LOWER than regular gasoline. When regular was $.85 then diesel was around $.77 or so. You could bet on the price relationship to be near that ratio.

However - in the past couple of years - diesel has often been priced equal to or as much as 10% higher than PREMIUM gasoline.

Everyone has a "theory" about why this is. But I'm curious to know if this true world-wide or is unique to our current circumstances in the US.

still the same. Theory? yes 56% of all cars sold last year at diesel and the rate keeps going up.

Oh you Germans and your teasing us with your insanely high market penetration of Gasoil engines! How cruel can you be?
Must you also tease us with your very-available pure biodiesel pumps too?

Lucky buggers.

Just got back from Detroit $3.69 and St Louis was $3.29 at the same time. Detroit was 40 to 50 cents more than RUG. None the less I still love the CRD. The wifes car takes premium gas so and it's almost as much as diesel.

Well on the NV/AZ border in Laughlin/BullHead City it varies from 3.19 on one side of town to 3.59. In Vegas its around 3.56 last time I was up there a week ago

All I saw was the location in Germany. And having been over there, I know the availability of bio is a LOT more than it is here, at least in South Florida. I think if Fl opened up biodiesel pumps at a gas station chain throughout the state, the world might implode.

But if you are with the US Armed Forces, then what are you referring to with the "56%" bit? That isn't the case here in the USA, not by a long shot! I think the market penetration of oiler engines stateside is somewhere around 10%.

Far too low for my tastes, as I'm sure most here would also agree with.

diesel tonight: 3.42 rug 2.92

even at 15% higher there is still an overall economic benefit.

Phoenixgasprices.com shows D2 at $3.25 and RUG at $2.83 both at West Phoenix locations as of 30 Nov 07. Fry's grocery card discount got $$3.19 in my wife's TDI two days ago.
The percentage of light diesel cars and CRD's and such is around 3-4 percent in the USA IIRC.
Diesel and especially clean diesel technology is by far the best, most practical, efficient way to go financially and for longetivity in the near to intermediate future.
But when new car buyers see a 2.8L or 3.0L "tiny" motor with $3.30/gal to have to use to fill with, they revert back to the "old standard" big V8 gas motor. Big oil sets this up to make people think this way.
Also there is NO location in Arizona that has E85. The governor recently repealed a state law banning E85 because big oil used this to block that competition factor. But since its too expensive to set up pumps it is still unavailable.

Hadn't heard of that. Is the goal to make servicemembers abroad pay about the same as they would stateside?

I don't think they subsidize anything - they just subtract all of the European taxes

High guys seems the CRD forum is still trudging along with the usual CRD problems. I do miss it here and on occasions lerk and think I'm sure glad I got rid of the orphan Liberty CRD.

Hey my last fill up on the MB CDI was 619.5 miles on 19.1 gallons (18.7 w/o venting) and that will be the last time I will try to vent and fill to top since it always overflows and after a few miles I have a big dirty streak down the side of the car. During that 619 miles I had even done a couple of speed runs and one occasion got to 140 mph before I had to back out of throttle. So far it is still a love affair with the CDI and I have no regrets buying the car.

Nothing like driving a 2 ton luxo car that has small car economy, and muscle car performance. Life can't get much better then me and the grandson driving around town in the CDI with our matching MB ball caps. 8)

If true that would be a pretty good indication that US fuel prices are not out of whack globally, despite all the oil company conspiracy theories..

The actual cost of fuel in Europe and beyond can be found on the internet. I have it book marked on another computer I think, if I get a chance I will look and see. One thing IIRC about the prices in Europe, was at the time GB had the cheapest fuel in Europe by about a dime before taxes.

Hey stranger! Yeah, you wouldn't mind helping move that CCV project along, would you? :)
