I've got a Walmart 850 CCA in it right now, bought that last winter when the factory Optima quit over the winter. My first choice would be (and will be next time) from Costco, in the largest size they have. Physical space isn't the issue, I have the battery turned sideways. IIRC, Costco's price for the 850cca / 1000ca big boy is only like $110. This comes standard with a full 36 month replacement (NOT prorated!) and they might have even upped it to 48 months.
.

So, what is the group # of this big battery? can you toss up some pics of how it sits in the engine bay please? i was looking at bigger batteries too, but they have the fuse box right there and i don't see how it would fit.

Sorry, I missed the questions you asked. I don't know the group number exactly, but I got the largest physical battery with the same height as the group 34 batteries so that the hood clearance would be the same. I'd post a picture of the support tray... Except it doesn't look as nice right now. I had unclipped the fuse box and it is capable of moving further forward, just watch the ABS computer underneath the fuse box. What I had done was to trim the front of the tray so that the battery could fit sideways and closer to the outside fender, which also got it away from the FCV and the CAC cooler hose a bit. The problem is at some point the edge of the tray must have cracked, and the battery doesn't want to sit level at the moment. I plan to re-make the tray from aluminum with standoffs rather than that cheap plastic. At the same time, I might lower the height to create a bit more clearance from the hood blanket.

Never unhook the battery while the modern vehicle is running, even in a modern diesel. That is the sure fire way to fry the PCM.Plus a gas KJ will shut off if you disconnect the battery while it is running,I imagine the CRD will also since the voltage regulator is not in the alternator.

Uh-huh, Yeah. Oh look, monkeys are flying out of my but.

My mechanic told me the same thing you guys are saying about the red top. Mine finally decided to give me my last start on Sunday so it went to the recycle bin at walmart where I scored a replacement for $88. Three year replacement and it fit my budget. My next one will be a yellow top after I get my winch mounted. But for now I'm hoping three years will at least see me out of the recession. :dizzy:
