Patience and perseverance has made this a long and annoying process. I live in the real world where stuff happens, mistakes are made. I understand that. What I don't get is the refusal to make this an easier process, the willingness (directive?) to make the consumer feel irrelevant, and most of all the lack of wanting repeat business. It's like dealing with a self destructive adolescent.

Welcome to CRD ownership. It's hard to find a dealer who cares about CRD problems. Not that I really blame them. They are totally unsupported and will make zero money on them. Who is going to take the time and money to train a tech on something they will see maybe twice in their life? Unless it's warranty you are much better off going to a diesel repair shop.

So, the Tech Advisor is recommending a new, not reman, new tranny. :D This would be covered by the 7/70 warranty. I should hear the final answer in a week or so.

As it stands now, nothing is final. However it does seem that they are trying SOMETHING, even though it is not the direction I personally would have gone if the roles were reversed.

Keep you all posted.

Well I got a call from the dealer today with the final decision. Chrysler is putting a factory re-manufactured tranny, not "new", in the CRD. :| It is still unclear, but it might be free of charge. There may not be the $100 deductable. I should get a call next week when it arrives to set up an appointment for the install.

I am happy to get the tranny, :D of course, but is the new converter still going to shutter in a short time? I wonder.

If I've learned one thing through this process, is patience, love, and forgiveness. :ROTFL:

Well, the tranny was replaced in my CRD today free of charge. :pepper: I really don't think there was anything wrong with it, but I would be on stupid pills :dizzy: if I didn't take a free tranny plus labor @ 71,000 on the clock. Trouble is, it still comes with the junk torque converter. So, I bought the Euro from the dealer for less than $400 and no labor charge. The advantage of buying it through the dealer is the part and labor are warrantied for 12 months and 12,000 miles. :D I suspect this will be the end of my converter troubles. If so it will be money well spent.

On another note, I believe this is my 100th post. Such a momentous occasion I cannot recall. :ROTFL:

hello again.

You won't believe it.

I don't believe it.

I thought my troubles were over.

The new tranny has a problem and I have to take it in AGAIN. It makes a clunk when downshifting from 2nd to 1st while moderate to heavy braking occurs. :furious: I also noticed when thinking of possible causes, the fluid level was a quart low. :furious: So, Friday it'll go in again. :furious: This results in 140 miles of driving every time it goes there. 70 mile round trips to drop off and pick up. :furious: This darn tranny malfunctioned inside of a week!!! :furious:

Did I mention that it's really starting to make me  ??

Keep ya'll posted.

When you get it back, it would be best to sell it.

Believe me I have thought about it. Thing is it suits my purposes perfectly when it is in good repair. It was great for 20k of the 32k miles I've had it. Plus, buying something different is not in the cards right now. Just frustrated, I still actually love the CRD. Just tired of poor service. :?

Right after my last post, I took the CRD to dealer #2, and of course, could not get the problem to replicate in front of a service person. Happened on the way there and back, but not then. So nothing further would be done, but at least it is on the record as customer reports problem... The next day, I went to dealer #3 (close to home) and the same thing happened.

Today I took it to dealer # 3. I actually got the problem to replicate for a service tech. :pepper: So the warranty roller coaster is getting started. Should hear from the dealer sometime tomorrow with a course of action.

Heard from the dealer Thursday, and they suspect a malfunctioning valve body. I was there when the pan was dropped and thankfully no chunks of tranny in the pan. :)

Waiting on a part hopefully I will get it back Monday or Tuesday.

Update you then.

Since the valve body replacement, all has functioned well. Thank God. Finally seems to be done with this issue. :pepper:

Sorry if this thread was just a gripe-fest for a while, I was more than a little frustrated with Chrysler.

Thanks to all for any support that has been given.

I have an 2006 with 120.000 Kilometers and on Saturday I found that at about 50 mph I was getting a really REALLY bad shudder.
I even "feel" something funny under heavy acceleration at lower speeds.
Will a faulty TC throw out a code or cause a cel?
I am also wondering about the warranties on our little gems.
What is the standard warranty? I am the 3rd owner.

I guess I will put the scan tool on it and see if anything pops up.
I will also try to lock out the O/D and see if that makes any difference.
Any other suggestions?
Thanks AL

06 in the US had a 36 month 36,000 bumper to bumper warranty. 05's had an additional 7 year 70k power train warranty

What you felt could very well be the torque converter :furious: Has yours had F37 done to it? Power was reduced and shift points were changed to "work around" the original problem. With a new improved TC you can get a GDE Full torque echo tune and your jeep will thank you for it :ROTFL:

Thanks for the info Joe.
When I checked the serial # to see if there were any outstanding recalls or anything it said everything had been done that was required. It did not specify what was done just that all was as it should be.
I put the scan tool on it and it said there were no stored codes. Then when I tried to to check enhanced DTC's it said it was unable to establish a link with the vehicle and to check that Ign. was on (it was) :) I tried it numerous times for both engine and tranny with the same results. (none)
I am going to take it for a cruise and see if I can do a live data capture.
Anyone else had this no link trouble between a scan tool and the on board computer??
Suggestions and most :P comments appreciated.
AL

I do not know the exact dates of production for the TC recall. However, if yours qualifies, Pursue it. I can tell you they will replace it with the same crap it was produced with. Here is where the interpersonal skills come into play. I, after many issues, was given a new (reman) transmission. It was to have the crap TC. I was able to get the factory Euro spec converter for $368 + tax and no labor because it was being replaced anyway. Find a good  service manager and you may get lucky too. I could have gotten the Euro for $350 delivered to my door but mopar does NOT warranty anything :grim: from a Mopar parts RESELLER such as we all by from online. Going through the dealer, I got a part and labor warranty. I thought the extra $ was worth the peace of mind. And scince the valve body went to sh*t they had no out. :pepper:

Good luck

The magic date is November 02, 2005
Those built before that date had the TC replaced with one that IS DIFFERENT then the older ones. What was put in is the what came in those made after 11/2/05. So it's not "the same crap" but is better but still lacking :dizzy: The original pre 11/2/05 was crap and failed in a few thousand miles.
The "Euro" version is worth the extra :jester:

Thanks
I guess I will try to find my libby's born on date.

I tried locking out the O/D but that made no change.
I can feel the shake starting in the steering at about 40 mph.
And it definitely seems tied in to acceleration.

This problem started suddenly as I just got home a few days previously from a 800 mile trip
during which she performed flawlessly.
I had my 19 foot camper behind and had just pulled out of the sanidump onto the highway
when I realized that the vehicle coming in my lane had not slowed to the thru town speed of 30 mph
and was still moving real fast. I put my foot into the go pedal harder and had not locked out the od but
was accelerating from a low speed so I can't see that being an issue.
She did seem to lug a bit at the time but I noticed nothing funny as I went home at low speeds.
It was only after unhooking and going out on the highway that the problem popped up.

Does anyone know if the Torque converter having issues causes a code/cel
and has anyone run into the failure to communicate between the scan tool and the libbys brain box?

I am also going to have a look at all motor and tranny mounts as well as cv joints etc.
Tranny fluid appears clean with no burnt odors.
At least it is a sunny warm day as my garage is the driveway.
Thanks for the help.
AL

Definitely check motor mounts but they have to come off the vehicle to truly check, pulling the passenger side doesn't appear to be too difficult and might be worth a check, take it off and shake it if it rattles it's bad (FYI both mounts are the same but for the heat shield which can be removed and swapped to a new mount saving $10 or so). Other things to at least look at include wheel balance, drive shaft U joints, the "banjo" joint up above the rear axle, and slightly sticky brakes combined with slightly warped rotors. All worth at least a look before digging into the tranny as I'm not sure a TC problem would present beginning with steering wheel shake at 40mph

No coded normally generated by a shuddering TC.
Don't know why you can't communicate with the "Brains". There are two that even cheap scanners see, the ECM (engine) and TCM (transmission) and yes they are seperate. Some got a flash that killed third party scanners but there was a real recall, F31 as I remember, for that as opposed to a TSB.
To check the right motor mount, the one that fails most often, some have found with two people with the hood open and one person watching and a second pushing the go pedal and brake that the engine will raise up on the right side if the right mount is bad. What Papa is saying about the mount ratteling is when they internally come apart. A long while back a member took a "bad" one apart and found a nut or bolt inside had come off. At one point I expect these will just wear out though.

Personally I would drop the rear drive shaft and inspect both U joints. This has caused what you discribed for more then a couple of members. TC shudder is normally noticed at 54 mph and above when the TC is locked up. AND the TC does lock up when you turn OD off. You just will be in 3rd instead of 4th or 5th :dizzy:

Thanks for the tips.
I found no issues with cv joints etc. There did seem to be some movement
where the axles leave the transaxle but the play seemed about the same on both sides so I will discount that for now.
However the hunt did make me aware of quite a bit of oil around the underside of the turbo which led me to the rubber hose being cracked at the clamp on the turbo end.
I guess it's time for the ehm
The turbo seems ok as it was making no odd noises although I did not inspect it under load.
I had already planned to do the brakestand test for the mounts but have a few things on the go
so time today was limited as was assistance.

The sudden onset of this problem makes me think more of a "failure" rather than a wear issue.
At 50 or so mph the shaking is by NO means subtle and it feels like something is gonna fly apart.
I have checked all wheel nuts and wheel bearings.
Ujoints seem tight but may need closer scrutiny as other things are eliminated.
I think I will unplug a sensor and see if I can catch a code then.
Do these engines have a harmonic balancer?
I remember having something similar in my small block vega many many moons ago and that's what it was then.
Wish I could figure out a way to attach my walkie talkies to or close to various components and listen to each.
I just don't have it in me to "surf" while trying to use my stethoscope :?
Thanks again everyone!!
