Im pretty sure in the GDE tune they remove the pilot injections, and that's why the jeep sounds more clanky than before. I wonder if we could get them to look into reinstating the pilot injections for better cold start ability.

I don't think all that pounding is good for head gaskets and connecting rods :banghead:
I intend to purchase a second ECM and have a stock tune in it. Then I'll be able to modify it using the under $20 flasher tool used in the "do it yourself" tune thread. That will require having my vehicle specific data put into the second ECM. I understand GDE tunes are encrypted and your ECM can/will become a "brick" if you try returning it. Last I checked the DYI thread is 37 pages long
I'm thinking that a basically stock with the EGR and flow control valves shut off.

I've cleaned the MAP several times in the past and with the GDE tune it has not been dirty. I ran a Pro Vent but it tended to clog in cold months so I removed it :furious:

To be fair, re-reading some of their tuning comments they mention they removed some of the pilot injections. Id say see what you can come up with.

I hadn't ever had a cold start problem, but this weekend took a trip into the mountains in WA where nighttime temps were sub zero. On the drive here my temp was low on the meter, but it ran fine. First morning it wouldn't crank. Tried a jump without luck, so I plugged in the block heater and left it for a few hours and it started and ran fine for about an hour before I parked it with the block heater plugged in for the evening. When I woke up this morning it cranked over and I left it idle while a ran in to get the family. By the time I came back outside it had stalled. This time when I try the ignition it cranks over and idles for 10 seconds before stalling with a CEL. Diesel mechanic in town opens tomorrow AM, but we are in a remote area and I'm not totally confident that we will be able to find someone familiar with a CRD. Anyone have suggestions?

My red top is original and may be tuckered out, but without a nearby shop that I could get a new one, I don't know if it's worth trying to jump at this point. I don't want to be stranded in the snow at 10 degrees.

Drumedic.

In sub zero temperatures the most logical problem is your fuel gelled.

There's a product called Diesel 911 made by Power Service. and is widely available at auto parts stores.

http://powerservice.com/psp_product/diesel-911/

I've never used it but it's worth a try.

I just got it started up, but CEL stays on. I'm nervous about heading down a cold steep mountain while it's snowing and 2 kids under 5 if it seems iffy. Is CEL concerning, or can that still happen with fuel gelling?

Can't say if fuel gelling caused the cel. But at below zero f temperatures you need to take steps to keep your fuel from gelling

So start there.

DO NOT USE ANY PRODUCT MADE FOR DEICING GASOLINE.......

I just had the same issue on a trip too. Ran fine with cel.
Checked codes #3 glow plug out.
Still starts on cold days.
Get a new battery.
I wait longer for the plugs to heat is all.
If you filled up in Washington the fuel should be treated to freezing temps already.

Drumedic, it sure sounds like you had gelled fuel. If that's the case, you will have a P0093 code because your injection pump was starving for fuel and thought that the system had an air leak. If it was only a case of gelled fuel, the CEL will clear after a few start cycles. If it stays on, get it scanned and post the code for further advice.

Thanks, everyone. I got it started and drove around a while then topped off the tank and added the 911 additive. CEL is off and a few drives. Will try again tomorrow to head down the road.

Yep, gelled fuel. Gotta use winterized fuel this time of year and add powerservice if the temps are going much south of 0f.
