some of my wvo buddies that hypermile jetta tdis use nitrogen in e-rated tires, rides like a brinks truck, but 65-70 MPG ain't nothing to complain about.Lots of little things will help alot. I get 24 MPG in a 8,600 lb ford excursion by running tires at max,and going 62mph,and thats on WVO (which has 8%-10%less cetane then ULSD,also less BTUs per pound.MPG is 1/2 car and 1/2 driver..........H

Using nitrogen in road tires is a waste of money. Racers use it so they can have a known expansion rate of the air vs heat regardless of ambient conditions. Air in different places and at different times has different amounts of water vapor and other bits that can cause the air to expand at different rates as the tires heat up - this can cause a change in expected traction. On the race track where you're on the edge of performance this is important. On the road it is pointless.

My guess is they're "hyper" inflating the tires. Don't need nitrogen for that. Personally I'll trade a few mpgs for saving my kidneys and having some traction available in case I need to stop suddenly or turn quickly.

I have nitrogen in my tires. I tried it on recomendation from a buddy who swears up and down his ride felt a lot better.

Well the ride did feel a lot better, and I got better MPGs afterwards. But at the same time I got the nitrogen, I upped my tire pressure to 38# so I suspect the MPG gain and ride comfort were more related to that then the nitrogen.

There is one concrete benefit that I can point to however. Since switching to nitrogen, my tire pressure has stayed steady for over a year. Before that I was adding air at least once a month. I recently brought it in to the tire place and they "topped" of my tires, but they said that my lowest inflated tire was only 2 psi's off of the 38# mark. That's not bad for not touching your tires for over a year

Third time I've driven the stretch of I-25 North from Albuquerque to Denver since I've had my CRD and everytime for whatever reason despite the high altitude, get my best highway mileage. Even @ 65-75 mpg, some AC, a detour thru Walsenburg, ORM, and 40 psi on my Cooper ATRS. Had 29.3 mpg calculated by hand (448.55 mi after 4% correction and 15.3 gallons of fuel added), EVIC was off by almost 4 mpg.

I was very glad to see that someone has addressed the N2 tire issue touching on all the high points in one series of articles. This is a great link for anyone who may be thinking about getting a nitrogen fill. http://ahotcupofjoe.wordpress.com/2008/ ... es-a-scam/ If you are already convinced that you need it, you will probably not be swayed by this logic. Personally I don't care what anyone puts in their tires, I just think that this is some good reasoning to help someone who was on the fence make a decision.

My awesome CRD is so inconsistent an average is hard to give without a calculator.

my low is 18.5 MPG, my high was 31 MPG.

In the last year or so I have not had two weeks in a row the same. Looking at my book My weekly tank averages have been 18.5 to 26 MPG, fuel up at the same station & pump every time.

The last 26 MPG week I had over 330 miles on the clicker at just 1/2 tank was looking at high 20's, then got into some stop and go hammer down hammer off freeway traffic killed that.

This week 245 miles at 1/2 tank. (so that would give me in the 20MPG range) after 3 years of checking every tank I have a good feel for what I'm getting just by where the gage is and miles driven.

Im guessing most of us that keep track can do the same.
