Seems it would be easier to weld in a drain boss on the bottom of the intercooler...be nice to get a Fumoto fit on there

Most big truck charged air coolers have drain plugs on them. I put a Sperco intercooler/charged air cooler on my 98 2500 Suburban and it had two 1/4" pipe plugs on the bottom to periodically drain it so it didn't fill up with oil and reduce the surface area for cooling.

:!: :!: :!: I am new to the forum with a used 05' CRD Sport that I have owned for now a month. It is currently broken down in New Mexico with a failed torque converter. I obtained a VIP report to find that the IC and the transmission had already been replaced in March.

:x My guess is that I am already having oil-in-the-line problems. Needless to say, I am looking to avoid futher problems. So to add to the undying need for the CCV Filter...

Do we have a release date for it?

Does anyone have a link to a thread that can explain how to fix this until the CCV filter comes out? (I still have to drive 1200miles home in a week)

Any other modifications I should look at to prevent further issues with my CRD?

I plan on modifying the intake box as well (keep getting filters full of rain water after driving the highway). Any ideas on that one?

-and now for just how much of newbie I am- What is Provent? :?:

How about mounted as low as possible and then two plugs made to close the top two hose connections...then some kinda suction device. Reaching here~

or...

A side mounted drain as low as possible and then we can jack up one side of the CRD (pretty high) so that the drain actually gets much closer to the bottom...

I know it's a bit crude, the fuel tank drain-plug on my Olds diesel was nothing more than a capscrew with a piece of sheet rubber as a seal. The CAC tanks are heavy plastic and should be able to take a tapped hole. If we have access to the bottom of the tanks this should work but I won't try it until it's out of warranty and also needs cleaning. Until then it's DC's problem.

If you guys would use a clear hose from the CCV to vent, you would see why draining may not really solve anything with these intercoolers. The oil film builds up pretty thick and it would do the same in the air passages in the IC and would not be effected by draining the oil build up in bottom of the CAC/InterCooler. I would imagine that every 30k to 40k (depending on some variables such as oil and driving styles) miles the tank will need removed for cleaning if left stock and the problem will not be from liquid oil but the oil film build up in the cross sections cooling areas. However there is no way for us to really tell if this is true and mybe a drain is a good idea. The VW TDI's would normaly drain about 1/2 pint from IC at the 60k mile mark, which could mean that a CRD would have that much to as much as double that volume.

I don't have the Jeep handy but I seem to remember being able to see the bottom of the inlet side of intercooler which may mean that an oil drain could be installed. But I will know for sure next week.

I have to agree. I think a drain would only help as a way of draining cleaning solvent out of the intercooler. The stuff I cleaned out of my intercooler hoses was thick and sticky. Without something to dissolve it, I don't think it would ever make it to a drain plug.

I think the only proper way to clean these CAC's will be to take them to radiator shop and have them boiled out or chemically cleaned or however they do radiators. I think you will really need a tank that you can drop the CAC in with some type of cleaner solvent flowing throughj the CAC until it come clean. Most of us not having that ability would need to take it then to a radiator shop for cleaning.

Assuming someone had a way to drain the intercooler, would it be feasible to use something like acetone or alcohol to flush the IC clean with. That way the alcohol or acetone would just evaporate out leaving nothing behind. Maybe this could be done after some other type of solvent was used to get the worst out. Definantly no smoking during this though.

Those two chemicals will not remove oil, much less a baked on gue we have in these CAC. You will need a good solvent like B100, #2D, or one of those exotic cleaners that is very dangerous to ones health.

OldNavy - I never caught an answer - Do you know of a vague/possible release date for the CCV Filter? I apologize for being so anxious - I really want to have 500K+ on my Jeep before I THINK ABOUT retiring it! :D

Would they remove leftovers from B100? Or lefovers from the solvents?

Looking more like Sept due to some design and mfg problems along with test vehicles out of action for various reasons.

Jeger wrote:

The B100 would leave a small amount of residue as would the #2D, but it would dry out (evaporate) and not be a problem. I'm not sure but I doubt that either would remove the leftovers.

Well, that's what we're all hoping. Cali switched to 100% ULSD on July 1 and coincidentally I had my first EGR replacement a week later so I'm starting fresh w/ a new EGR and ULSD - we'll see how long it lasts.
