Post subject:  How many left?

I have an 05 CRD that I'm totally pleased with. This weekend my father in law is visiting.
He is driving a 140k mile Blazer and he falls in love with my CRD. He's making up excuses to drive places so he can take the Liberty.
We've been to the three nearest dealers and found 2, 7, and 3 CRDs. The problem is he's selling his home and doesn't have any cash until that deal goes through. I know the place on ebay in IN say they have many left but does anyone have any idea if CRDs will still be around in 2-3 months?
I'm sure we could find a great used one but he really wants new.

Thanks,
Steve

Hard to say, now that they have been discontinued.

It's not something anyone can say, predicting the number of CRD's on the lot in a couple of months is like doing the weather that far in advance.

That said the CRD will be back for '07 MY, Liberty may have a sheet metal change and look more like the new Nitro that is on the Liberty chassis. There is no reason not to believe from the sales numbers that D/C would not bring back the CRD Liberty for '07 model year. However he may like the GC over the Liberty due to better ride and more options, or even the possibility of a diesel in Durango and Commander later on in model year.

Old N, you are right about another vehicle with a diesel for '07, I suspect.

However, DCX has learned (like VW, and Mercedes) that Diesel "enthusiasts" (if that is a correct term) will pay extra to have the diesel engine. That is why MB only offers the Diesel in an "expensive" model and why you cant buy a stripped down Jetta.

I don't think the profit line on the liberty is high enough so I suspect tha the GC will be the vehicle (loaded up of course) with the new diesel. Why make 2k on a car (liberty) , when you can make 7k (gc).

It does not make DCX evil people, just capitalists.

Me thinks you forget that VW had/has the Touareg V10 with a base price of about $55,000 and you can get a Jetta w/o autotranny or sunroof. I think we are getting ready to see D/C unleash diesels and FFV vehicles like you would not believe. D/C did a 2 year contract for about 100k TDI engines and I doubt that they will all be sold in Europe or rest of the world, those numbers may not be correct, it could have been more engines or a little longer time for contract. I do seem to remember the engines were the PD-100's, which would easy give 44 to 48 mpg in a Caliber. I would probably jump on one of those myself, and to hech with 34 to 38 mpg MB V6 CDI Magnum. Not sure about that though, the Maggie sure is a big comfortable ride and I dearly love her, but she is not a diesel.

I just purchased and 06 Liberty Sport CRD last Friday. During my searching along the Colorado Front Range I found 40 to 50 different Liberty CRDs on dealer lots. Problem here in Colorado is that they are selling well and the dealers aren't anxious to give a great deal. I did get mine for the employee price plus the 0%, 60 months so I didn't do too bad. The mix I found was about 50/50 Sport and Limited.

How large an area is the Colorado Front Range?

When I lived there, the CO front range was FT. Collins south to CO Springs. I always thought of it as Cheyenne, WY to Pueblo, CO.

It Just keeps growing every year.

Those engines could only be for the caliber (neon). No way could a TDI engine work in the liberty or even the compass. However, I still think you will only see it put in the more expensive model (personally dont know what they are). As for getting Jettas on the cheap with a diesel. It WAS possible to do it, but now with $ 3 gas, the Jettas I have seen advertised are all automatics, have every option possible, and a few even had dealer add ons. In fact, if you look on ebay, or autotrader, they are very rare and bring big prices compared to the gas jetta. Dealers are greedy, not stupid.

Yes all those TDI engines were for the Caliber, not Liberty. Thought that was what I said, but these who knows. However the 2L PD would do fine in the Compas since it is on Caliber platform and has same drive train. Yep and it is harder for the dealer to sell an manual TDI now that a couple years ago, since people have discovered that a Jetta TDI automatic well loaded is not anymore then we loaded Toyata Camray and unlike the Camray V6, the TDI will hit mid 40's instead of mid to upper 20's for fuel economy.

But the EPA will probably do something else to try and get the diesel outlawed, unless there is some new blood in the EPA before long.

Longarm, thanks for the offer. And thanks everyone for the replies.

To be more clear, I live in CO but he lives in northern ID. Anyone been to any dealers around Spokane with CRDs?
He's also quite (extremely?, obsessively?) picky about these sorts of things.
He's sitting in my living room with the brochure making out a build sheet.
I keep telling him they don't make them to order anymore.

Anyway, if there's 40-50 in CO now there should still be some in a couple of months somewhere.
The one local dealer we talked to didn't seem quick to deal either, as they lied about the current rebate.
If it were me I'd just call the ebay dealer in IN and ship one out. We'll see.

Thanks,
Steve

Uh, guys, unless VW has recently changed the TDI's available, there are no manual transmission Jettas being imported to the US, per the dealer whenever I have asked all this last year. Their sales guy tells me he's begged and begged, and keeps getting told "no way." Sales guy tells me I'm not the only one who has said they'd buy a new one if . . . .

I would say no. Here in the MidWest sales were the slowest nationwide on the CRDs last year and this year before announcement of the end of the CRD. Now, the dealer I got mine at who had 21 in stock at the beginning of the year was down to 12 just 2 weeks ago and is now down to only 6 left.

It may be the Indiana eBay dealer everyone is talking about though, so maybe the fast sales are due to out of state purchases. H.E. McGonigal in Kokomo, IN sound familiar?

$ 3 (going to 4) dollar gas is the best incentive. My dealer here in NH is out and would like to get more (he even tried to get me to trade mine on a dodge diesel truck). He can't trade out with many dealers as NH & ME are the only New England states not on Cal standards.

When I looked at TDI's a few months ago at the Springfield, MO dealer, they had three manual transmission TDI's but couldn't keep the auto models in stock. They were pretty much loaded up with sunroof, leather, etc. I just couldn't justify spending more on a small car when I could get a Liberty CRD with a real 4x4 system for less $$. :P
