I see that the Smart Fortwo will be coming to the US but the diesel will not be available because it doesnt meet federal emissions requirements.

How can a vehicle that gets 70MPG+ "smart" pollute more than one that gets less than 20 im just guessing but say duramax, cummins, powerstroke etc. Do they test emissions per gallon burned? If so that is ridiculous especially when the smart will travel more than 3X farther on that one gallon!! It could be puffing black smoke the whole way and still pollute less.

The tests read PPM = Parts Per Million and about all they care about are particulate matter and NOx emmissions. The environmental groups like the Sierra Club care more about these two dubious measurements than about grams per mile of greenhouse gases. What they are saying is that the little diesel in the smart car will emit more toxic emmissions than the 6.0L gas engine in a H2. Kinda stupid when you think about it. Basically the greenies are holding out for fuel cell technology. I seem to remember when they were holding out for electric cars that only went 100 miles before needing a 12 hour recharge.

maybe if the manufacturers smart up and add a leaf blower option to the exhaust and call it a propulsion module ... then the PPM will lower significantly.
