Post subject:  ESP BAS light

I just purchased a 2006 CRD, and within 300 miles the ESP BAS light came on, along with some other weird things. Even the speedometer and Tach. went to zero several times. I took it in to the dealer, and they talked to DC. DC had them replace the clockspring. That didn't fix the problem, so back to the phone with DC. The Tech at DC was at this point clueless, so the dealer continued to look, with 4 tech's working on it. Finally, and maybe by luck, they found it. It was the large wiring harness, from the back of the engine, that passes behind the fuel filter mounting bracket. There is a sharp edge on this bracket, that cut thru the harness and shorted several wires to ground, when the engine would move under load. They fixed the harness and placed a small ruber hose over the sharp edge. I made a better fix when I got it home, I took a radatior hose, that had the same bend, and inside dia. as the harness, cut it to length, slit the back side, and placed it over the harness, held it on with several wire ties. I have over 80 miles, and NO failure. It would fail before it was fixed in about 500 feet. I'll keep you posted.........

Leave it to Jeepster's to come up with better solutions! Goes with the slogan, "It's a Jeep thing, you wouldn't understand".
We must be the McGyver's of the consumer automotive market.

Just a side note, on my 05 the wiring cable is in a slightly different angle and wrapped so the 05's should
not have this issue. Nice photo, now to have a 05 and 06 next to each other to see what looks different
under the hood.

I just checked my January build 06 and the wire bundle is against the bracket also :( It does have nylon mesh on it but that's most likely for looks  I know what I'll be doing this weekend :?

Thanks for the tip. Mine just turned 1200 miles

Ok here it is with the cover off. No sharp edges and no pressure on entry.

And with the cover on:

I believe the 05's are ok on this point, if they are all like mine.
Looking at the 06, it looks like the cable is not up where the edges
are turned back so as not to cut into the cable.

Good pictures, can you find out what holds your harness up so high? Is it just the bend or is there a mount? Thanks.
