| Post subject: | Tank Gallons |
I have a problem with my Libby, When I fill the tank, I never put more than 13.2 gallons of diesel, I fill it with that much diesel when the low gas light is on for a few miles, Also, when I full fill the tank (I ussually top it off) my gas gauge does not go to full, it get's just to the 1/8 mark. Anyone knows how can I take out my floater to check?, Could my problem be the floater or could it be air inside the tank? Also, is this a common issue or Am I the only one having this problem?. I'm very confused on what could be my problem... Thanks in advance. |

When full, my guage pegs past the full mark...hopefully it stays above the full mark for 75+/- a few miles. What are your miles per gallon? Are you filling up at a pump that is on an incline ( figuring you might be filling up at the same station )? You might have a bad fuel tank sender. I would take it in the next oil change and let them check it. |

My Miles per gallon are 24 combined (highway/City) I beleive that when the light comes on I have maybe 5 or 6 gallons inside the tank. The wierd thing is that my over head computer tells me that I can drive for 342 miles with the full tank but I can barely hit the 218 when the light comes on and the over head computer goes to zero miles. I don't know were the computer takes the info, from the sending unit?. This problem is not anoying or anything, but I just want to fix it so I can drive more miles per tank. Thanks |

If you're filling the tank until the pump shuts off, from having the low fuel light on, and you're only getting 13 gallons into it, and the fuel gauge never registers above 1/8th, you're definitely having problems with either the level sender and/or vent system. On mine, a full fill from the low fuel light is at least 18 gallons. If you're putting in 13 gallons (well over 1/2 tank), and the fuel gauge never registers over 1/8th, it's definitely the fuel level sender. Even if I'm misunderstanding how your fuel gauge is behaving, going from low fuel light to full indication on 13 gallons, something is still fubar. I'd still bet on the level sender, but could also be a problem with your vent system. Bottom line, I'd recommend you have it checked out. |

How can I check the vent?? Unfortunately, this ain't easy. The sending unit and check valve are in the top of the tank. You have to drop the fuel tank out of the vehicle to check them. Also, the sending unit module has a special locking ring that secures and seals it to the top of the tank. Unless you've got the correct adapter to remove/reinstall the locking ring, even that is going to be a PITA. Also, the sending unit has an electronic module as an integral part of it. Unless it's something very obvious such as the float arm being bent or other mechanical problem, you're talking an electronic problem that most likely will require replacement of the entire sending unit. At the very least, I'd recommend going to a shop with a lift and proper support equipment to safely remove the tank. Then you could take the tank itself to the appropriate people to have the vent system and sending unit checked out. |

Ok. I will give it a try anyway, if I found that taking the unit out of the tank is hard, I will take it to a shop. Where can I find a Sending Unit?, Is this sending unit the same unit that the gassers have? Is this a Stealership part only or can I find a cheaper replacement? Thanks |
