Post subject:  7 quarts of oil?

My wife took my 2006 CRD in to the dealer for its' first oil change. I provided my own oil (Mobil 1 Synthetic Truck Turbo Diesel 5W-40). The manual says the oil capacity is 6.4 so I expected to get a 1/2 quart or so back from the 7 quarts I provided. I made sure my wife knew to expect to get some back. She questioned them when they did not give her any back. The service guy told her they put 6.4 in the engine and put the rest in the oil filter. He said that's the way they do it for all diesels. I am concerned now that my engine is overfilled with oil and what negative impact this may have. My dipstick shows the level about 1/4 inch above the MAX line. Is there need for concern here? Or is this an accpetable practice with the CRD? Also, the service guy put a sticker on my window for my next oil change in 3,000 miles.
Any advice is appreciated.

Your CRD is overfilled! Definantly get some of that oil out of there. I would rather have mine a little low than overfull. Someone reported here that Full on their dipstick is actually 1/8 inch under that MAX line. Too much oil can cause even more oil to go through your CCV and end up in the intercooloer and I believe can cause many problems down the road. Take the time to read up on this forum and you will learn a lot.

Put a 1/2 qt in the oil filter? Would love to see that trick considering it's screwed in on it's side. It is overfilled and will likely get sucked down to "full" through the CCV. You will see it in your CAC hoses, give it about a 2 weeks.

It is not an accpetable practice for several reasons. The engine has too much oil in the cranck case and will actually blow the excess out through the CCV system and on this engine it means the oil will be blown/sucked into the intercooler system. We have enough problems with oil in the CAC system without adding to the problem. Increasing the amount of oil going into the CCV system on regular basis is going to lead to premature turbo failure, cyclinder/piston wear and cat failure amoung a few things.

What the dealer just told you in BS as he probably does not even know what oil was used or how much used and is just a careless individual wanting the money and you out of his shop after he has collected the money.

Well, when they did my first oil change, they put 12 QUARTS of oil in my CRD!!! To this day, I have no idea what possessed them to do so. I drove the car on a 100-mile trip the next day without knowing it. I can't believe I wasn't smart enough to check the oil before leaving ... I should have known not to trust the dealership to get a simple OC right. Anyway, my dad, who had his CRD's oil changed the same day, same pace, called me and said "check your oil, right now" and it turned out both our KJs had 12 quarts in them. No damage, thank goodness ... had the OC redone (and checked it this time!), got a refund. Can you believe that? Anyhow, sorry for the tangent. It is my understanding that oil capacity includes what goes in the oil filter. One of these guys here will probably have an answer, but if not, call another dealership and ask. IMO, the oil should not be over the fill line.

After reading all the responses to this fellow, I'm thinking I might be best to check for backlash from the incident I just relayed. The dealership told me there was "no damage" but I'll bet they never really looked. This was five months ago (entire episode is well-documented, though). What should I look for and where should I look for it?

Well since you didn't hydrolock, the only real problem would be all the oil that got blown/sucked into the turbo charger and intercooler and those parts will cost about $3000 plus labor if it fail because of that insident.

Looking for a CCV vent line and intercooler full of oil sludge is a good place to start. See old-navy's sticky thread above with the pictures of the elephant-hose mod for details.

You would probably know if you were going to have problems by now. Most likely show up first in a very oily CAC. Keep a watch for leaking crank or cam seals too. I have watched the owners of the bus company where I work part-time overfill engines all the time. They even go as far as to scratch an extra mark on the dipsticks. Never saw any lasting damage from the practice but I wouldn't do it. Got a good laugh the first time I changed oil on my CRD. Used their shop with them standing around watching. I put in the 6 1/2 quarts and went in the other room to clean my hands. I heard a comment from across the shop "you might as well put the rest of that gallon in." Came back to find the old guy pulling the stick and he had the oil jug in hand. Old habits die hard.

I'm glad we don't have large low rpm bus diesels in our CRD's.

They obviously had it confused with a Dodge RAM equipped with the 24V Cummins Turbo Diesel.

I drained (carefully!) just under 1/2 a quart of oil. The dipstick shows it at just under the MAX fill line now. I feel better now. Thanks for all the replies. Wow, that oil sure was black for being fresh with just 40 miles on it. I assume that is normal for the diesel?

Yes it is, and what makes it black is the carbon in the oil.

Post subject:  6.4

When I change mine, I put 6.4 quarts in and that puts it right in the middle-- between the max and min lines. MAX often means just what it says-- MAX, not ideal or where it has to be when you change the oil.

It takes awhile after you put the oil in it for it for it to register right on the dip stick. If your a quick lube place-- I can see a potential to overfill by contnuing to add oil before waiting for the stick to read right.

Post subject:  Oil Capacity and Warranty Info

Why does my owners manual say 6.3 qts capacity? It also says to use 5w30 Mobil 1. Also, I can find nothing in the warranty information that refers to any warranty for the diesel. My warranty book on the the rear says "First Edition " if this means anything
