today on the way to work Trany would not go into overdrive. Stopped to get a drink and cut motor off and when I started it back up it ran fine? |

Seems like the logic goes on the tranny sometimes. I have seen probably about 6 posts like this. The VW tdi's autos would to into safe mode, but we had a procedure for the tranny to relearn, turn off ignition, hold the accelerator to the floor, turn the key back on, hold for 5 seconds and bingo, drive like a new car, this one just must need to be turned off. Too many have described this and when shut off, it resets itself and runs fine. Who knows. |

I have had it go into safe mode before but it would not go over 45 mph. This time it would go 70-75mph but would not go into overdrive. |

Mine did the same thing. Hasn't done it since, though, and no recent CEL's. |

After the filter TSB and computer flashes I quit having problems like this. Check the build date of your transmission and see if its in the range for the filter TSB. If it is don't take no for an answer if they won't perform it. tell them to call STAR techs. |

Computers get confused. Something as simple as a minor voltage spike can throw them off. Turning the engine off, waiting a few seconds and restarting will re-boot the computer. We do this all day long on the big stuff. Too bad we don't have a "Ctrl, Alt+Del" switch on the dash. Be persistant with the filter TSB, it is worth the effort. The closer you get to 30K miles where it becomes recommended maintenance, the harder it will be to get it done under warranty. |

ha ha remember that old joke email that circulated throughout businesses in the middle to late 90's, "If GM and Microsoft Built a Joint Venture Car... " It was hilarious. If GM and Microsoft Built a Joint Venture Car ... 1. For no apparent reason, while cruising along the highway, the engine would stop running and the dashboard would turn solid blue and the car would need to be stopped, all windows rolled up then and "re-started". 2. Each time a cellphone was plugged into the cigarette lighter to be re-charged, the right drivers would need to be installed on the car so it could recognize the new hardware. 3. If too many accessories were being used at one time, the car would run out of memory and just stop working and the dashboard would turn blue. It may or may never start again, "just depends." 4. Every time a different route was taken to the same or a different destination, the whole car would need to be "re-configured" to operate on those roads. 5. Whenever a music CD was inserted into the radio, the car would ask if you want to install this new software. 6. If a repair needed to be done or a part switched out, the whole car would have to be "re-configured" to allow it to run with the new hardware, and, it would never, ever work right the first time. So, you'd have to wait an hour on the phone with tech support for the part mfr. Unfortunately, they'd tell you it was not an error due to their part, but rather, it was a GM problem. Then you'd wait another hour on the phone with GM and they'd tell you, it was the part company's problem. 7. Every two to five years, a new operating system would come out for your GM car, and when it did, your car's hardware wouldnt have the capacity to run the new operating system, so ... you'd need to buy a new car - even though you are still paying on this one. 8. Whe the car was brought into a GM dealership to be repaired, they'd charge you $49.99 an hour to diagnose it. After 5 hours of diagnosis, they'd call and tell you it was "dead" or "fried" and you'd need to buy a new car. 9. Every time a light on the dashboard comes on, the car would need to be stopped, everything would have to be shut-down, and the operating system would need to be re-installed along with all other programs. Then, the next 3 days would need to be spent trying to make them all work together again. There were others, it was pretty fun back then. I posted a newer version of that same thing in the off topic forum. If GM had kept up with technology |

Anyone have recommendations on how to get info on what maintenance has already been performed on the jeep? (10k miles when I got it) The dealer I bought it from gave me a list of what they did, but they listed a fllash update where there was not an associated sticker on the radiator. Ironically, there is a sticker from a previous flash done in 2005, so I know at least some of the TSB's have been performed. Thanks folks! |

Short of plugging into DC computer and reading the software versions, the best thing is looking for the stickers. If the tech did the software updates they are supposed to sticker it (legally required). The tranny filters would be more difficult to tell. On mine, it is noticable that the pan was dropped and resealed but you have to look very close. |
