Post subject:  Hello!

We traded in my wife's Corolla (good car) for a "Beryl Green" CRD a month or so ago. It was a demo with a little over 10,000 Kms on it that had been used by the service manager. A friend of mine was the salesman and we did very well. Have been reading up on this website about the issues that appear to be cropping up. My wife informed me today that the CEL just came on... That will likely be the EGR I expect. Oh well, I already had an appointment to look after the BCM re-flash in a couple of days - now they can look into whatever this turns out to be. My buddy told me on Friday that he has sold two more CRD's for a total of three in our area. Oh yeah, the CRD just loves biodiesel. Smoother operation and very little diesel odour.

One observation that I made myself on the first test drive: I felt that the initial acceleration was being muted somehow, possibly to save the transmission over the long haul. I have a turbocharged gasoline sedan (Jetta) and I am familiar with the principal and real-world experience of turbo-lag (not that the 1.8T has all that much, really) but this seemed like something else. As it is a diesel with a variable vane system, lag is not likely the culprit here - electronics would be my bet. I have since read here about similar suspicions after my first impression. The initial tip-in has the 'volume' turned down - no mistake.

I now wonder if I shouldn't have opted for an extended warranty...?

Greetings. I think the "lag" is electronic also. The CRD is loaded with electronic "countermeasures" like ESP. Other electronic throttle, computer controlled diesels I've driven lacked this extended duration of throttle lag. I find it aggravating.

The extended warranty "need" would depend on how much original warranty you had and how much you were willing to pay to go beyond that orignal warranty. You indicated that you had a 5yr/100k engine warranty?

Since it had 10000kms, I think I would have them replace the fuel filter if they haven't already.

The "lag" is electronic thanks to EPA and reduction of sudden over fueling and the polution it is said to cause from over rich throttle advance. The reason you don't notice it as much on 1.8T was it's a gasser and dosen't have the ability to dump as much fuel as a diesel. Try a 1.9 TDI it has the same problem, but with VAG-COM most of that can be eliminated and then also chippers usuall get rid of the rest.

Wish we had Vag-Com and could override it a bit
