Neither. No idea which is best/worse of the two. I use Amsoil Euro 5w40.

Neither the Amsoil or the Mobil 1 is CI-4+ rated, so Rotella is a better choice for our EGR equipped diesels.

As soon as DC is done with their oil consumption test on mine, the 0W40 is gone and Rotella 5W40 will go back in. The whole CF vs CI-4/CI-4+ debate for use in this engine just underscores how clueless DC engineering is concerning their own diesel product. They should know better.

Hi Folks;

I'm using the Amsoil 5W-40 Euro in mine right now, but after I've used up what's in my garage, I'll be switching to the Series 3000 Synthetic 5W-30 Heavy-Duty Diesel Oil from Amsoil. This may sound a bit odd, but this is what Amsoil has specifically recommended for "0W and 5W-40 engines" that need the CI-4+ rating.

Just my 2 cents worth...

I somehow new this would become a "brand x is better than brand y oil debate"

I have never seen a discussion about oil that didn't go that way. Most of the oils are good, some better than others. However, discussions about oil seem to be more like discussions about religion.

Use what you think is best and be done with it. You won't change my mind, and I can't change yours.

Mobil 1 5w-40 T&SUV/Delvac 1 that is CI-4 plus rated is what is in my CRD. It is a class IV full synthetic oil.

One thing about the CI-4 plus is the shear abilities is raised for chain operated DOHC engines like the new MB V6 CDI to name a few. The shear effect is probably main reason the Mobil 1 0w-40 was listed for the MB 5 cylinder diesel with it's chain driven SOHC and then was carried over to our DOHC engine but was not needed due to belt driven.

I will probably switch my Magnum (double row chain driven DOHC with high head temps) when the new CI-4 Plus oils become available. I sure would like to have both my vehicles on the same oil again, makes life easier for me. Maybe save me from CRS mistakes of old age. :?

Isn't the key here the "class IV" part? I'm still running the Rotella T 5w40, but even though the bottle says full synthetic on it, it's not, right?

I'm contemplating right now whether or not to extend from the 6250 mile oil change interval up to 10,000 miles and just do oil/oil filter and air filter change every 10kmi but am not sure about it yet. I seem to do 6000 miles every 4 months.

Correct the current Rotella T is a class III oil made from minerial oil base stocks, but the new Rotella T will be a Class IV oil from the looks of things.

I would think the current Rotella you are using would do ok for the 10,000 change, but I guess you could pull a oil sample and have it tested at about 5000 miles and see how it is doing then you will know for sure. I plan on it at 6000 miles on our CRD and I use the class IV Mobil 1 T & SUV 5w-40 oil. There are a lot of variables that effect how far you can go on oil changes, type/quality of fuel, driving conditions and driving styles to name a few.
