Post subject:  Engine Stalling

I was just wondering if anybody had experienced some engine stalling at low speeds? the other day i turned my car on put it in reverse let of the brake and the car just completely stalled. also when accelerating from a stop slowly when it gets to about 2500rpm it stalls out a little bit, but not completely. so i was wondering it anyone else had this problem and how to fix it. thanks.[/b]

Stalling as in quiting or more like running rough?

If it is more like running rough you might be experiencing some of the problems associated with the transmission TSB's listed above and what you are identifying as stalling (which would be a motor issue) is really a shifting issue.

I have the same problem. I always park at a little incline, hood facing downhill. If I crank it up in the morning and dont wait a couple of seconds, it has a hard time going uphill in reverse. When I then switch back into drive, there is a good possibility the engine will stall.

in revese it actually completely shuts off, as in i have to put it in park and turn the engine back on. this has only hapend twice. but i bought the car brand new and this should not happen on a brand new car. in forward gears it just gives out a little bit, but when i give it some gas it goes fine, it is only when i accellerate slow.

I had this problem and the tranny filter TSB fixed it.

My experience with diesels is that they rarely stall so your talking greek to me. On the back up issue, it actually affects driving any direction after the CRD has been parked for a time. A bad check valve in the filter allows the fluid to drain from the TC. Letting it run for a few minutes before shifting into D or R will mask the problem but not fix it. Not fixing it will eventually result in a failed TC. The newest TSB will replace both the transmission and the sump filter. Speculation is that the newest TSB replaced the older one because so much material was already shredded off the TC that the sumps filter was picking it up and clogging it.

Demand the TSB, it should really be a recall!!!!! On the other hand, if you don't mind the bother wait until the TC shreds. They might replace it with a better TC too.

I made the same complaint with the DC rep. and was told this is not fixable. There is an issue with the shape of the pan and the location of the pick-up tube in the pan. Point the nose of your Jeep downhill and the tranny fluid runs to the front of the pan leaving the pick-up tube sucking air and oil starving the clutch pack. The only way you can move is with gravity (downhill/forward). They recommended maneuvering such that you don't have to back uphill.

I have to say that is a ridiculous answer by the DC guy. You should get it in writing. That fact in itself would be enough for a lemon law return for ALL CRDs if true.

However, in my work I often am working in rural areas and park on inclines without problem. So, I don't know if it is just a problem for you, or for all. If I could not park at a certain angle I would have to get rid of vehicle as there are many times I position the vehicle that I can only either back up, or go forward, but not do both inorder to get out.

Definately surprised this problem hasn't drawn more attention. This problem is not CRD specific as it's common to everthing using this transmission. Can't even recall the number of times I had to back a pick-up truck uphill with a heavy load in the bed. Would think this would show up quickly in a Ram pick-up just by how they get used. Interesting that when it happens the whole Jeep shakes & shudders and just won't move.

Should mention that it's not as common since the filter TSB was done. Have a feeling there is more to it than just the angle of the vehicle. The pick-up tube is part of the main transmission filter assy and may have a seal problem where it ports into the transmission. Changed the filters and the problem appeared to go away. A lot of tranny quirks went away when the filter TSB was done.

Ryan,

There is a sticky above for CRD related TSB's that we are trying to keep up to date. Below are the ones we have listed:

Quote:
TRANSMISSION:

18-008-06 & 18-009-06 supercedes 18-018-05 FLASH UPGRADE TO IMPROVE SHIFT POINTS
http://www.alldata.com/tsb/Chrysler/114 ... 81.htmlTSB 18-023-06.

TSB 18-023-06 7/14/06 Replaces both 18-009-06 and 18-008-06. Similar verbage, "improvement
to torque converter operation and durability, improved glow plug operation and
durability, update to security key immobilizer system operation, improved throttle
valve shutdown operation and durability, and improved diagnostics for DTC P0504
brake switch signal MIL. (Thanks to RFCRD and Ripster)

21-007-06 , supercedes & 21-016-05 TRANSMISSION FILTERS
http://www.alldata.com/tsb/Chrysler/114 ... index.html

21-009-06 TCM And TC REPLACEMENT
http://www.lostjeeps.com/forum/phpBB3/vie ... php?t=7763
http://www.wjjeeps.com/kj/TSB/kj_2100906.pdf

21-007-06 superceded 21-016-05 for the series of build dates listed and it replaced both filters rather than just the one with the bad check valve. 21-009-06 kicked in if you didn't get to the other done before your TC was shredded.

Im getting the same effect,

If ive been driving all day, like going shopping with my wife, i would say 1 out of 4 times starting up and putting it in reverse the KJ just sits there you really have to push the pedel to get her to do anything, then finally she will move. Also Im having issues with stuttering and completely stalling out at red lights some times. Im going to have the TSB done soon hope it helps. Im getting to the point that the 07 unlim looks really nice.
