Post subject:  Diagnostic Scanner

Has anyone found a good diagnostic scanner for working on the CRD yet? I'm looking for one to keep track of our CRD KJ and our Miata NB. Which one should I buy?

ScanGage is what I use. Works on both the Magnum and the CRD.

I have used this one before, not on a CRD. I am told it works great and I will have one when the time comes.

Have you had any problems or functions that don't work? Scangauge lists the CRD as incompatible. I emailed them about this. Their explanation was that the CRD uses two computers to control stuff. One of the computers goes to sleep and they don't know how to wake it up so it will report its data. That's my Cliff note version from memory.

Whenever I need to pull codes I go to Autozone and they let me use their new, up-to-date scanner free of charge.

These go beyond reading codes. They give you live sensor data. Useful for finding lazy sensors or a collections of problems not bad enough to trip the CEL but combined cause problems.

On my '90 Blazer, I was getting really bad milage and poor performance. It had no trouble codes in the computer. I got an AutoXray scanner that could read sensor data. I found that the MAP sensor was reading atmosphere pressure pretty much all of the time as soon as I stepped on the gas. Problem solved? Replace the MAP and the new one did the same thing. Took it back, told the parts store it was bad out of the box. Got another one, did the same. What would cause 3 sensors to read the same? A plugged cat. Replaced that and the thing ran great. Moral of the story: Sometimes pulling codes, if there are any, isn't enough. You have to dig deeper and find the reason a sensor is "bad". Too bad most dealers don't have someone that can interpret problems rather than swap parts.

Thanks for the input guys! I did a lot of searching today and (oddly enough, BEFORE BLake posted the second time) decided on the AutoXray EZ Scan 2000.

Image

I thought about doing the Autozone/Advance reading Mike, but now the CRD is throwing the Valve CEL (national backorder, what a joke) and I want to keep track of what codes it's throwing while I drive around with the CEL on...and then the Meeazda threw a CEL. It's used and I want to work on it myself (as much as I can), so I wanted to invest in a scanner. Then I mentioned it to my father-in-law and he liked my idea to get one, so he's splitting the cost with me since I found one that will work on his Accord and Pacifica. So it's all good and, since I get it for half price, I might return the 2000 and get the 5000 instead (hee hee). 8)

I'll let you guys know how it works.

Before you spring for the kit, be aware that the last 2 flashes caused my software (AutoTap - I don't recommend it) to lose the abilility first to clear codes, and finally to even read OBDII dtc's. Before that I could read the codes, clear them and read other non proprietary data. On my 02 Liberty I can read most Jeep non OBDII engine related data as well as clear DTC's. Now on the CRD, I can only read about 10 generic parameters, like rpm, engine temp, mass air flow rate, air intake temperature, MAP and a few others. I have also read a post from a scangauge owner who could read data, even though it wasn't supposed to be able to do it - the last flash update rendered it usless. I'd see if AutoXRay has a no questions asked, 30 day money back policy.

That's good info. I'll check the CRD as soon as I get the scanner. I mainly got it for the Meeazda, since the CRD is still under warranty and everything, but I'd also like to be able to read the CRD's codes too. So I'll definitely check. The company I ordered from has a great return policy.

Shoot you might as well go with the model 6000 that way you get the EZ-PC 500 kit too.....haha. They all look like great scanners, might be something to put on my wish list REAL soon!! Let us all know how it works if you do get it. :):)

Hi Ranger1,
I just read these (approx 10) parameters on the CRD yesterday for the first time...still trying to solve my annoying vibration at idle/low revs. I had only driven about 10 kms to a diesel injection place, and after about 10 minutes with the engine off, plugged in the scanner. The air intake temp was reading about 77 degrees C (170F) with the engine off then cooled down to 50 to 60 degrees C (120 to 140F) on engine startup. Is this normal? Where is the intake temp sensor? All other readings looked "normal" or so I thought. Can you perhaps post your readings of all parameters at idle?

Are you still out there Ranger1?

Yes those readings are similar to what I see on mine. Engine induced heat soak at idle, especially when outside temps are in the high 90's easily approach 180F. Once I get moving it drops as airflow increases across the IC to levels close to what you're reading. The intake manifold temperature sensor is a combination MAP/Temp sensor and is located on the driver side of the engine, just below the fuel rail pressure sensor. Some estimates of turbocharged air temperatures right out of the turbo as as high as 500F. Getting it down to 120F-140F is pretty decent. I'll get a set of readings this weekend and post them.

Exact! i put out on a separate thread the email from them describing the problem

Post subject:  Diagnostic readings

Readings from the obdii port sitting in the driveway, 85F outside temperature:

Engine Speed------------------------------------------------1410 rpm
Comprehensive Component Monitoring Status--------Complete
EGR Monitoring status--------------------------------------Complete
Engine Coolant Temperature------------------------------187F
Fuel System Monitoring Status----------------------------Complete
Intake Air Temperature-------------------------------------176F
Manifold Absolute Pressure(MAP)-------------------------31.6 in Hg
Mass Air Flow Rate-------------------------------------------4.515 lb/min
Misfire Monitoring Status -----------------------------------Complete
OBD Requirements--------------------------------------------OBDII FED
Vehicle Speed--------------------------------------------------0 mph

Interesting data is Mass Air Flow at idle, hot, EGR on 1.125 lb/min
------------------------Mass Air Flow at idle, hot, EGR off, 2.25 lb/min

EGR on at idle appears to cut fresh air flow by 50%.

Aaahhhhh? This was at idle? When my CRDs idles the tach reads just under 750 rpm. ? Am I missing something ?

1st set of readings at 1410 rpm, just like it says. Last set of MAF readings at 762 rpm, added data points to show MAF readings when egr shuts off after 60 seconds of idle.

Thanks Ranger1.
Interesting data about the EGR.
I am halfway through installing an EGT gauge and have the probe coiled up in the engine bay near the coolant tank.
The readings I am getting from under the hood validate the scanner's air intake sensor reading (of 50-60 degrees C I mentioned earlier) after sitting at idle for a little while. When the car is moving the temp drops back to near ambient temp. Proves we get a reasonable amount of air flow under the hood when in motion!
By the way...great EGT readout unit, rectangular and tiny.

Ranger1. Isn't this what the latest recall is about?

Also does anyone know what standard our CRD's use like ISO 9141 or whatever? I tried my VAG-COM (ISO9141) and it didn't work in OBDII mode but it does on my 99 CHEROKEE
