Post subject:  New Oil Spec From Chrylser??

I brought my 2005 CRD in for it's 25,000 mile service a couple days ago. When I got home, i looked at the paperwork and see they put in 15W40 oil??? I emailed the service manager about this and here is his reply:

"Chrysler has informed us that all diesels will use 15/40, they actually want us to cross it out in the manuals

When we get this in writing, will forward copy."

Can anybody confirm this?

I had oil change done on tues 8/8. They put in 0w-40 as usual (which they hate since they can't buy it in bulk and it costs them alot for those little bottles).

I hope this isn't a line of BS from your SM to cover their screw-up. I got the same response from my SM last winter when I asked. He was surprised to see the 0W40 spec and even questioned it then. It would be refreshing to see DC finally come to their senses on the oil specs? This will be a welcome change if we can get this confirmed.

I hope it's not BS either but the other dealer i called could not find anything from Chrysler confirming this change. Mistakes i can tolerate..lying to my face...that's a whole different animal.

The ony oil spec change I have heard about is the new CJ+ 4 oil for the new vehicles that use ULSD & have particle filters and it will be backward useable in our vehicles, but not required for '06 or earlier vehicles. I have seen two offerings so far, 15w-40 non synthetic and 5w-40 full synthetic Group IV oil.

My guess is you just got BS for a mistake.

If it is a diesel rated oil it shouldl not cause any problem, maybe a small drop in MPG's is all.

I agree with OldNavy. But, I would take it a step further and demand that until they have proof from DCX, they must follow the Owner's Manual. I would take it back and watch them perform the oil change AGAIN and free and charge.
This will make the lying morons realize that everyone is human but covering up with lies is not acceptable.

I think it's a line of BS because we would likely see a TSB issued on this change. It apperars that DC's lines of communication with their dealers are not very efficient, demonstrated by there steller execution of existing TSB's. I hope they didn't charge you for the synthetic oil change, big difference between $10 for bulk 15/40 oil and $50 for 7 qt bottles of 0/40.

All they will do next time is put in the wrong oil but write it up correctly...lol

We will see, here is the latest from them:

"We are in contact with STAR, tech assit, we are trying to get that in writing for you,
Will fax when arrives."

So either my dealer is way ahead of all the other dealers out there...or... willing to go to create lengths to cover their butts.

FYI- also had them check my balljoints. They of course had nothing official from DC on this yet but checked for me anyway. They were bad and replaced under warranty. I was suprised actually, as there was no indication of anything wrong or getting loose up front over the last few weeks/months.

These are the reasons that my wife wants nothing to do with DCX for any future vehicles. The products are great but the service sucks bad.

I don't think that's a DC thing, as the same compliants are heard through out the Ford community.

I think it's the whole automobile industry. There are too many people that just don't know any better. At least DC's products are good except for a certain transmission used in CRD's  What if the whole car was junk?

Nissan is no better on service. My Xterra was a good car, but the dealer(s) I used for waranty work (what little of it there was) should have been arrested for impersonating mechanics. In addition, I had my son take the car in for an oil change and they literally came running out to him to say that the brakes were so bad the car should not come down off the lift.

Needless to say, my son called me and I told the service manager that I would be happy to come down and inspect the brakes myself and if they were bad I would pay double, but if they were good, I would have him and his mechanic arrested for attempted fraud. The car came off the lift without further incident and I drove it another 20-25k before it even needed pads.

Unfortunately, this is not just the auto industry. When I started in the computer industry in 1999 you got free tech support at a toll free number. By 01 most manufacturers did away with the toll free number, and a lot now have minimal support. The support they do have is farmed out to India, where language is an added incovenience.

Business today has found that if people perceive they are able to buy an item cheaper, they will deal with marginal service. Think Wal-mart...

....and give it a few years. You will be able to buy a cheap Chineese built car. Would not be surprised to see Wal-mart selling them too.

BS 15-40 will NEVER be a Jeep spec because using it would not allow Jeep to meet their CAFE standards. CAFE is the only reason why they recommend 0w-40

I suspect they are using 15w40 because they can buy in bulk much cheaper and 15w is much more widely available than 0w.

Personally, I just ordered two cases of Mobil 1 5w40 Full Synthetic Turbo Diesel oil, which I will put on with a new WIX filter at my first OC.

Eventually, this oil will be available at Wally Mart and autozone, but I don't think they stock it yet.

I found the shelves stocked full of this oil at my local Mills Fleet Farm a couple of days ago. Unfortunately, I think Fleet Farm is only a "midwest thing".

I just made the change this weekend since mine was built on 01-06 and that same oil has been sitting in there for the past 8 months. The oil that came out was like sludge, and I don't mean just because it was dirty...it was so thick..you could spread it on your toast like butter....but I wouldn't recommend that

Definetly does not sound like a quality oil! Mine was also built in 1/06 . I got it in May and changed the oil to Shell Rotella
5-40W synthetic at 600 miles. the oil didn't look like sludge though.
