I ran the new USLD fuel for 4 fill ups and my gas mileage was only 21 at best no matter how I drove. We found some B11 (yes 11% not 10%) while passing throug Wisconsin and the mileage went up to 25 next tank was LSD and mileage was 23 with some trail time in 4 lo. Exhaust smell was non-existant with the ULSD fuel but I would rather have better economy.

Anyone else have any practical experiance with thye USLD?

Your fuel mileage will drop. Supposidly ULSD has a lower energy content, closer to D1/K1 due to the extra refining. There is also no guarantee that cetane will increase over LDS (such as Eurpean ULSD) which will also effect your mileage. Adding some biodiesel raises your effecitve cetane and in theory will improve your mileage. Might be just a coincidence but I'm getting my best mileage running between b10 and b20.

Here is some information on ULSD from the chevron website. The energy content will not drop that much...supposedly only about 1%. BioD has about 10% less energy than Dino D2, so in theory, you should see lower milage with BioD. D1 has much much less energy content...so you can't compare ULSD to D1, in the winter time in states which see cold temps, they cut the D2 with D1 to prevent it from gelling in the cold...this is why fuel economy drops in the winter. Also, Cetane will be higher than the 40/42 and should be upwards of 45-50.

Lubricity:
Lubricity is a measure of the fuel's ability to lubricate and protect the various parts of the engine's fuel injection system from wear. The processing required to reduce sulfur to 15 ppm also removes naturally-occurring lubricity agents in diesel fuel. To manage this change the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) adopted the lubricity specification defined in ASTM D975 for all diesel fuels and this standard went into effect January 1, 2005.
The D975 specification is based on the High Frequency Reciprocating Rig (HFRR) test (D 6079) and requires a wear scar no larger than 520 microns.

Energy Content:
In general, the processing required to reduce sulfur to 15 ppm also reduces the aromatics content and density of diesel fuel, resulting in a reduction in energy content (BTU/gal).
The expected reduction in energy content is on the order of 1% and may affect fuel mileage.

Cetane Number:
In general, the processing required to reduce sulfur to 15ppm also reduces the aromatics content resulting in an increase to the cetane number.
