| Post subject: | Oil Usage Question |
I check my oil regularly and have noticed that the Jeep is starting to use a little. I wouldn't worry about it normally but until this point it didn't use any oil. A little history-I changed oil to Rotella T at 750 miles. I did another change at just over 6000 miles. I'm now at 11300 miles and have used just under a quart since my last change. I drove through a major thunderstorm in NM and noticed oil usage after that. Is it possible I damaged seals in the turbo or am I just overthinking the usage? |

I know that you are going to get a ton of responses from people who will blame your oil use on everything from poor engine design to aliens sucking it out for breakfast food. Just take the "advice" you get with a very suspicious attitude. My CRD uses very little oil, about 8 oz over the 6k oil cycle, but since the dip stick is so screwy I wouldn't be suprised to learn that you have really only used about 8 oz yourself. Just watch the level of your oil for a while and see how it does. I suspect that you will be told by the dealer that 1qt over 6k miles is "within specs" anyway. |

I have observed different oil reading between when the vehicle is cold and hot. I suspect thermal expansion of the oil, with the variation of reading between 1/4-1/2 of the "okay" range on the dipstick. Per DC specifications it is normal for the engine to use 1 quart of oil per 1000 miles. On a less than serious note, I believe the turbo heat evaporates oil, which is then able to pass by the exhaust side seals, and is then suck in through egr, condenses returned into the intake and eventually the pan. 1 Quart Per 1000 miles. If that happens with my CRD I will be pissed. Thats way to much oil. |

Change your air filter immediately. Your probably pulling oil through the turbo seals now that the filter is sufficiently clogged. Recommended change interval is 6250 miles. Probably got wet in the thunderstorm and a whole bunch of additional particulates stuck to it after that... |

I changed the filter when I got home from the trip. I'm just wondering if I did any permanent damage to the seals in the turbo. |

No. I would not worry about that one bit. |

Yes, you killed it. Honestly, it still under warranty and worrying about nothing. If running a vehicle in the rain is going to cause it to fail, very one who owns this rig is screwed. Sorry for the attitude, but just drive it to it fails and either fix it or sell it. At least that is my plan, I am not spending a dime over the payments, fuel and maintenance, until I am sure it will hold together or become reliable before the warranty is over. Rob |

Rob You should study up before making such statements. There is no mechanical oil seal to break - the oil is what the turbo shaft rides on (along with ball bearings in some cases) and the oil IS the seal - the pressure differential keeps it on the correct side of the turbo shaft. Read here: http://www.majesticturbo.com/inside.html Unless ours is a really unique turbo, and you can prove me wrong(which would be nice so I could learn more), that's how it works... |

Join the club, you probably got your air filter wet driving in the rain. Once damp, it causes an airflow constriction that pulls motor oil through the turbo seals along with excessive blowby drafting through the CCV (hopefully you have a CCV filter). I found that driving in even one good rainstorm can result in up to 1/2 qt of oil per tank of fuel. Once I fixed the air intake so it didn't suck rainwater directly into the filter, my oil consumption problems went away (and that's running 0W40 oil). |

OK, let's take care of the obvious first - Check underneath at the oil drain plug and oil filter, see if there's any leakage. Just under a quart for 5000 miles isn't bad, could be a small leak from one of these. Check the soot in the tailpipe. If it's oily and wet, you're pushing oil thru the engine. If it's dry and powdery, that's normal. Might sound dumb, but check the oil fill cap and dipstick, make sure they're seated properly. Check underneath and along the sides of the engine, see if you can spot any obvious leaks. Might have a time of it if you have skid plates. How much oil did you put in at the last change? Some people have seen that anything more than 6 1/2 quarts ends up going out the tailpipe within a few hundred miles. Have you been checking the level regularly, ie has it been a sudden decrease over the course of your recent trip, or could it have been gradual over the past 5000 miles? If you have been checking it regularly and it was a sudden decrease during your recent trip, then the wet/clogged air filter scenario is possible. Lastly, pull the hoses loose at the intercooler and look inside. If they're coated with wet liquid oil, then I'd say the wet/clogged air filter scenario is a good bet. If what's inside is just strings of what looks like dried black snot, ie it's been in there a while, then I'd doubt the air filter being the cause, could be the engine started using more oil for some other reason. |
