I had my EGR valve part #5166555AB replaced today under warranty. The list price of that jewel is around $300. If D.C. doesn't develop a reliable fix we had better start complaining to the EPA about unreliable emissions equipment. I have no desire to shell out the cash for these things once the 3 year base warranty is gone. Wowser!!!

Does anyone have a description of TSB 18-007-05 ? That reflash sure improved my idle.

Wouldn't that be covered under the 7/70? It's an integral part of the vehicle isn't it?

IIRC, the egr is only covered by 3/36K unless you purchased the extended warranty. Some have already reported being told by dealerships that its only covered for 3/36. I think the warranty booklet shows the same.

I didn't dawn on me until just a little while ago, but don't most auto manufacturers cover their emissions with a longer warranty. I remember my Ford having a good warranty on the emmisions that was longer than 3/36. Wouldn't have mattered with my Ford though as I hacked off the stock exhaust.

Time will tell. Chrysler may come up with a fix before the time comes to begin paying for them (and complaining to NHTSA).

As an aside though, my dad's 2000 Corolla with 90k failed emissions due to a catalytic converter gone bad. Toyota replaced it free of charge under their "extended emissions warranty program" (there was not extended warranty on the car, it was something that all Toyota's have. That may be the case with other car companies too.

Ah, $300 for the AB valve. I've wondered about that. I can tell you that the price on the AA valve (the other half of the pair) is over $600, which may explain why DC replaces the cheaper valve first when EGR codes show up.

Only in California where it's required by law to go to 80,000 miles.

Hmm, So if you live in a bordering state you could go acroos the border for service and iot would be covered?????

Between EGR, transmission issues / poor economy, and furure maint cost I have thought about cutting my losses and say good by to the CRD. But there isn't anything in its class that beginds to compare. Maybe go back to the V6 Liberty... .

Good Luck in cutting your losses. I went to a huge dealer chain yesterday with that same thought in mind and was insulted. I was offered no more than $16K for my Limited CRD w/ the dvd nav, moonroof, ect... and only 23K miles in mint condition. What a crock of crud.

Face it, we married these things. If you want to trade it, start watching ebay and some of the auto sales websites to get a feel for what you can get and availability. Personally believe there will be an opportunity to sell it once the new ones are all sold and before new '07-'08 diesels are available. You will still take a pounding, just look at what used gasser KJ's are getting. For now, I see the best choice is to keep it and make the best of the situation until you are out of warranty.

In general, if you go to a dealer and whine about how much you hate your present car, they will low ball you on the trade value. Their logic is that your dislike for your present ride will let you take less on a trade. In many instances they get away with the low ball offer as it is in keeping with your bad feelings about the car (i.e. "its such a lousy car they only would offer me x") and this allows you to accept the low offer as you are psycholgicaly prepared to be screwed.

I don't know what the CRDs bring in trade these days, but all gas SUVs with poor mpg are getting dog poop for trade value.

The toyota dealerships around Indy told me they do not want any trades as they are not profitable for them - just a hassle. At one in particular, I was just playing around looking at FJs and played it up like I would not let my CRD go for anything due to 30mpg fuel consumption. They insisted they could do good so I let them try. $14,000 trade in value for a fully loaded '05 Sport that stickered at nearly $28k and only has 14k miles. They actually came out and apologized, 3 of them, because they knew the value was an insult but that is what the auto auctions are getting them for right now. They said I could do at least $6k better selling it myself as they had checked e-bay and noticed as much for themselves, and probably $8k due to the lift and other additions.

Do not try to trade in a CRD, you WILL get racked over the coals. You just can not get fair value for a unique and obscure item such as the CRD.

I was told that the emissions components, even if hung on the engine/drivetrain, are only covered 3/36 and not 7/70. But with the extended (Wynn's no longer sells to public but ask your 5-star dealer to square you away, only $1400 for 100,000 mile [starting at odometer 0] and 4 year [starting at warranty purchase]) it is still covered.

I was also told by the SM that parts under warranty tend to be priced pretty cheap. Once the bulk of the cars hit the 3/36 the price seems to change, upwards. He predicts EGRs will retail for $800 next year.

As for the repeated fixes, you need your Jeep to throw a code saying the EGR Flow Control Valve is bad. When that is replaced, all problems solved. I don't have the code or the Flow Control Valve part number but this Forum does. Sorry.

We are between the rock and the hard place, the thing I don't understand is our brothers across the pond don't have as many problems in general as we do. The 2.5 CRD has been exported since 2002. I expressed concerns about the long term porblems with the egr an the dealer said don't worry they won't leave me hanging. Time will tell. I find it hard to believe that emisions are only covered 36k. If I were refused at 40k I would be escalating this back to Detroit.

Most of us bought the CRD because nothing in its class is out there, so what would you replace it with? You would have to buy a full size SUV or truck to get the towing capacity.

New to the forum; just purchased a 2006 Liberty CRD on Wednesday, August 23rd. While looking through the warranty section this morning, I noticed there is a section specific to the diesel engine; it specifically says it BEGINS AFTER 3 years or 36,000 miles. I read and re-read this to make sure I wasn't dreaming, but from the way it reads, this is an additional warranty after the initial bumper to bumper expires. Wouldn't the emissions be covered since they are specific to the diesel?

EGR valves are not specific to Diesel engines. Gassers have them too. That engine warranty is only for the engine and it's internal components and nothing else.

EGRs only became a real problem after they began making them computer controlled. They did this because most people would simply plug the vacuum connection with a screw when the valve went bad instead of paying the $$$ to replace it. Now you can't do that of course because it will throw codes and cause a CEL.

About the trade-ins....NEVER trade in your car unless you absolutely have no other choice. Even if you have something that holds it value very well and is in high demand...you still aren't going to get as much as you could if you sold it privately. The only consideration to this is that if you owe more on the car than what the blue book is....if that is the case.....save money each month and start paying the car down....also pay on your loan every two weeks instead of once per month....interest on car loans accrues daily...so when you make payments every two weeks, you pay the car down quicker, but still are only paying out the same amount of money every month. If you really like the car but are afraid of things happening down the road...either bite the bullet and buy the 100k warranty, or open a club or savings account for your jeep and put a little money in there each month, week, or each time you get paid....you won't miss 25 or 50 bucks, and when your warranty is up you should have a nice chunk of change in there to bail yourself out if something big like the tranny goes south.

Just my two cents.

The computer and catalityc converter are covered under 8/80 for emissions, EGR is 3/36. Give the frequency of EGR failure call DC customer service and complain about the lack of warranty. If all need to speakup on this issue. Also write your states Attourney General asking they force DC to extend the warranty given the high failure rate.

I have also wondered why the Euro CRDs dont have all these problems. As far as the EGR valve, do they have them over there? I read in a trucking industry mag that even the hevy duty commercial engines have experienced reliability issues since the inception of EGR requirements for diesels. I sure hope the price of an EGR valve doesnt go up to $800 after warranty is over. I would be even more tempted to find a way to bypass the dang thing if that was the case.

It's been a while. My father-in-law's 82 Benz 300D has EGR....but someone drilled a screw into the vacuum hole when it stopped working :)
