This is the pits....3 days, 520 miles on the clock and we're almost to San Diego. Just left a Border Patrol checkpoint and was accelerating vigerously to ~65 when all of a sudden lost power. RPM's went to about 3000 and speed came down to 35 mph and would not do anything else. No lights, engine running smooth....just no power. Pulled over and it idled fine so I shut it down to cycle the brain and started it back up and ran great. Got to San Diego and all is well except for this glitch. FYI, the first tank of fuel between Tucson and Yuma was 24.5 cruising at 65 to 85. Got to S. D., after cruising 75, showing 25.6 on the EVIC so things seem to be OK. Total miles now ~620. Any hints on where I should look or what my concern level should be. I may try a dealer monday but diesels are not sold in CA so my confidence level is not very high. |

I probably wouldn't worry unless it happens again ( I know that sounds stupid...). Best to just keep driving it and if it happens again, note the driving conditions and compare them to the time before. You could also go to Auto Zone or some place and get them to read the computer to see if anything comes up...Quicker than the dealer and usually free. |

I'm with DW. It is probably sort of like when you catch your toe on that one step now and then coming up from the basement. Trips you up and slows you down but it only happens like every 200th time you use the steps. |

Do a NHTSB report, you accelerated to get up to highway speed, when it stopped accelerating you could easily have been rear ended. This is all related to the TCM programming that is trashing the TC . |

Sounds like what happened to me, only the hose going from the turbo to the intercooler blew off. That was fun! |

I seem to recall reading something in the manual (yes, I am one of the few that read it) mentioning a circumstance that would cause the "brain" to erroneously detect a WOT problem and go into limp. Guess I need to dig it back out and look that up. Needless to say the other drivers were not to happy with me. |

Similar to my problem where the MAF was bad. I second the idea that you should hit the auto store and check for any codes. I did not get one until several hundred miles after my incident... |

I believe what your referencing is the "two footed" warning. It says if you push the brake and the accelerator at the same time- it will cause it to think the throttle is stuck and will retard power. |

You're right...that's what I was thinking about. Too bad it wasn't the cause 'cause now I need to find someplace to check for a code. tks |

Mine did the exact same thing yesterday — in Phoenix no less! Just like you, it started up fine after I turned it off. My CEL light never came on! I took it dealer, in Avondale, and mentioned that they might check the EGR valve. Today they told me they are replacing the valve. Have to wait two more days for the part to arrive. The poster who mentioned the intercooler hose coming disconnected describes exactly what this feels like. That happened on my Ford Powerstroke, and the symptoms were identical to what this felt like. Only problem is when a hose blows off, it doesn't reconnect when you restart the engine! |

Only problem is when a hose blows off, it doesn't reconnect when you restart the engine! Did your dealer happen to mention if it threw a code? It was sure a shock when it happened, especially so far from home and in CA, most dealers have never seen a CRD. I called one in San Diego and he was worried I would bring it in because they had no one CRD trained. So far, it's performing flawlessly but I did do a report to NHSTA cause I was bloodly close to being rear-ended. http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/?CFID=1676 ... N=51804411 I would like to suggest you do the same and get these on record. |

My dealer did not mention a code, but I will ask on Thursday when I pick it up. Incidentally, when this happened, I was playing around with the cruise control buttons...I now think that this caused the computer to make it go into limp mode. At least now, I know that if it happens again, I should pull over and restart. |

Got it back today and here's what the report said: Retrieve DTC's: P0088 & P0401. Necessary to perform diagnostic test as per service manual for DTC P0088 first: fuel pressure solenoid malfunction. Perform diagnostic test as per service manual for DTC P0401: EGR valve intermittently sitcking.. R&I fuel rail and replace fuel pressure solenoid. Replace EGR valve. Clear DTC. Reprogram PCM for improved glow plug operation (Refer TSB: 18-023-06). And perform verification test. So it looks like both solenoid and EGR were bad. Still don't know if that is what caused the limp mode! |
