While trying to find where my new found oil leak was coming from I noticed what appears to be a few bolts missing. They appear to connect the Trans to the Engine, on the passenger side, to the left of the exhaust pipe, right behind the oil pan. Is this normal? I allready got a appt to have them check the oil leak I was just wondering if this was anything to worry about. Couldnt take a pic cause the wife needed to use the CRD to go to work, but If somebody has a pic I could point it out. |

My crossmember only had a couple of bolts remaining when I took it in for the engine mount clunk, they replaced them but I haven't checked to see if they were still there today. |

Its a slow leak but its getting more noticable. I also noticed further up on the engine there some oil leaking to, like from some little allan head bolt on the head on the left side of the engine. It really looks like its missing bolts there. I cant wait to see how they blame this one on me. |

This area obviously should not contain any fluid. The nearest fluids are the engine oil that is held back by the rear main seal and the transmission fluid that is held back by the trans pump seal. If your noticing engine oil seeping from that juncture then it is the rear main seal. These are known to leak when the seal breaks down somewhere near 100K miles give or take 15K. If it's happening on a relatively new vehicle, then the seal was not properly assembled at the factory. |

Thanks for the explanation DZL_LOU. Its just weird that its leaking so soon, only reason I even looked underneath is cause the CRD was about a half quart low. I hate to keep adding oil in, oils not cheap for this thing. Heck, my Wrangler has 100,000 on it and it doesnt leak a bit of engine oil. And the engines been partialy submerged in water a few times.. Im taking it in tomorrow, and ill let you know what they say. |

Hmmmm........ One more item I forgot to add. Take some break cleaner or carb cleaner and spray the juncture area clean and wipe it off. Monitor the situation daily, I say this to validate that it is truly the main seal and not leaking from the tubo and somehow being dripped on to the bell housing. This maybe worth a try to eliminate the turbo leaking oil. If you can get under the Libby, and wipe off the bell housing and juncture real good you will be able to detect if it is a turbo leak dripping or truly a rear main seal leak. |

Well, I got it back from the dealer and it appears that the Rear Main seal is gone. While I was under the lift we both saw the oil dripping out of the bellhousing and the tech spray some brake cleaner into the bellhousing and quite a bit of oil came dripping out. Also he noticed some oil leak on the head itself. But he wanted to track it down so degreased the engine and advised me to drive it all weekend and bring it back on Monday so he could better track it down and start repair. Great, 20,000 miles and the rear main is gone allready. Maybe Ill get a free oil change out of them. |

Well I just got the CRD back again and it appears the oil leak was coming from the oil galley plug in the right side of the cylinder head, tech tightend it up and said it should be good to go. |

I was just under my Jeep this past weekend changing the oil and noticed oil in the same area coming from around the bolts above/behind the oil drain plug area. I also recently had to add a bit of oil for the first time right before the oil change. I have about 12,000 miles now. |

Check out the litte allen head bolt on the head, on the right(Passenger) side of the engine above the turbo. Thats where mine was coming from, kind of right below the factory ccv hose. |

I thought I would reopen this thread because of my experience recently. I checked the oil (as I always do when I fuel up) and it seemed to be normal. I also checked the ATF and it was a bit low. It wasn't terribly low, so I let it go a bit longer to see if it was leaking and how fast. Well, went to fuel up today and checked the ATF....way low. It was reading at or slightly below the cold mark when it was warmed fully warmed up. I stopped by the store to get some fluid on the way home. It took a full quart to get it to almost the full hot mark. It's still not all the way to full hot. I noticed some oil leakage last time I was under the truck to change the oil several weeks ago. I thought I would go under there again to see if I could find any place where ATF would be leaking. I see nowhere where it is coming out. I did have the Jeep in for the egr flow control replacement back in June and they ended up doing the tranny filter replacement at that time. I know I checked it several times since then and the fluid level was good. How can it possibly be drinking ATF all the sudden? Is there somewhere on the engine where I should be looking for a leak? here is a picture I snapped just today of the underside where the oil is leaking. It's in the same place that everyone else is finding oil. It definitely doesn't look as bad in person as it does with a flash camera....but I guess the photo speaks for itself.
Any thoughts? |

I will remind you that the the fluid level is checked in park and hot,. There are two (2) sets of holes and the holes closest to bottom should not be used. Also when you add the fluid and it shows full, drive it around the block and then check again. For some reason the Jeep will not show proper chenge level till driven a short distance, it may just need the RPM's up to 2000 for a minute or two.

The engine oil might be leaking out of CAC at the FCV or EGR and finding its way back along the engine and down. |

Wow, thats a bit of oil. Looks exactly like how my CRD did when it was leaking. Check out that allan bolt I was talking about before. Thats where the dealer said my oil was coming from, and making its way down the block. Definatly bring it back. |

I checked that bolt and it's dry. It's coming from somewhere down lower on the engine. |

The engine oil might be leaking out of CAC at the FCV or EGR and finding its way back along the engine and down. I think you may be right...and I hope you are. I didn't know that they had even touched the transmission because they couldn't figure out how to "code" the repair for the egr flow control on the paperwork...whatever that means. Anyway, I knew they fixed the egr flow, but didn't know about the transmission fix until I finally got my paperwork sent in the mail and then saw that there was a new gasket on the tranny pan when I was down there changing the oil a few weeks ago. They had originally told me that they could not reproduce the delayed gear engagement issues I was having and found no problem. Apparently they changed their minds and fixed it after all and didn't bother to tell me. Ever since the jeep was in the shop, it has experienced periodic bouts of jerky shifts around 35 mph. It would come and go....sometimes very jerky. It didn't do that before it was worked on. In retrospect, maybe it has been due to the fact that the ATF was low since they changed the filters out. I swear that I have checked it at least once or twice since then...but maybe I'm dreaming. ...and maybe I misread it. it is kind of hard to read sometimes in my opinion. I'm going to keep a close eye on the fluid level to make sure it isn't eating it or leaking. As for the oil leak, I guess I'll have it looked at at some point. |
